Will it be worth it? I am planning to get it when it comes out but I have heard it'll be out around the end of the year..

I'm excited to finally see some octo-cores on the drawing table. Hopefully they wont wait until next year to release them.

There aren't really many programs making use of 6 cores yet, much less 8. You won't really see drastic improvement on games that can't make use of the extra threads. Of course if the architecture can rival that of Sandy Bridge or the upcoming Ivy Bridge, THEN I'll be interested. Otherwise, it's not worth worrying about right now.

I'm building a system sometime in July-August, and unless something groundbreaking is released by then, I'm going with the i5 2500k. As of right now there's like 6 AM3+ boards out, all of which aren't very good tbh. ASUS has some new boards coming out soon that are pretty sweet but as I said, I highly doubt it'll rival the SB/IB architecture anyway.

    edit:
Fun fact - you pay like maybe $50-$100 more on average for an i5 2500k vs Phenom II X6 1100T, and the i5 blows it out of the water. It's basically an i7 2600k without HT, for basically the same price as 1100T.. but whatever

Exactly so there isn't much of a reason to get this yet.

You'd see minimal performance gains at best, the clients are not optimized to use all of the threads. It would be better than your average quadcore, but only marginally. Not worth the upgrade at the current time, especially if your intention is just to run bots. Seeing as the Phenom II X6 series is relatively new, I don't see these Bulldozer CPUs being in the same price point. They're probably going to market these as enthusiast CPUs to try to compete with Intel's high end CPUs. I doubt you'll see a Bulldozer under $200, plus you have to buy a new board unless you already have an AM3+ board, which I doubt.

    tl;dr
Not going to be worth upgrading for the next few years at least, especially when it will probably barely rival Sandy Bridge at a higher price point, not to mention Ivy Bridge is coming out around the same time which I'm like 99.99999% positive will be better than Bulldozer.

Yeah but I got a AMD M/B so Bulldozer would be the best choice because it's the first 32nm processor they have made.

I also got ASUS Crosshair IV Formula and you can update the bios and run AM3+ sockets.

I coulda swore that a few months back 2 guys won a Nobel Prize for harnassing a material in mass quantities that can/will bring processors to a whole different level. I wonder how far off that is :(

Hopefully they can deliver good performance, cos I reckon Ivy Bridge is gonna be the champ. :/

I'm not saying it won't be the best in the AMD line, but it probably will be worse/similar to Sandy Bridge, at a higher cost.. with Ivy Bridge right around the corner. Intel (for once) has the best bang/buck and I don't see that changing just yet.

You can spend the money on a $200-$300+ processor to see minimal performance gains over their top quads/six cores if you want but just remember, I told ya so.

It's definitely going to compete against Sandy Bridge but we will see when they come out.

I use AMD myself but seeing that I could double my FPS by buying 2600k or 2500k makes me wonder should I buy one of those but if Bulldozer is a success then Intel will have to drop prices.

By the time they're out, Ivy Bridge will be too, which uses 22nm architecture. It might compete with Sandy Bridge, but at a higher cost surely.. and I'm like 99.99999999999% positive it will have NOTHING on Ivy Bridge lol. Intel is already a better value than AMD currently, which is unusual but undeniable. You spend like $50 maximum more on an i5 2500k vs 1100t, and the i5 2500k blows it out of the water. The X6 series is already relatively new, so I don't see significant price drops when the Bulldozers come out to be likely, meaning that you'll be paying more for likely the same performance vs Sandy Bridge.. and that's ASSUMING Intel doesn't also adjust prices on Sandy Bridge when Ivy Bridge is released.

I have NEVER used an Intel processor, I've stuck to AMD for the past like 8 years.. but it's undeniable at this point that Intel has the upper hand lol, both in price and performance. The 2nd generation of the i3/i5/i7 processors are incredibly low priced and outperform most of their first generation counterparts.

This, and the 2600k beats the 980x in a lot of benchies too.

So yeah, intel have stepped up there game a lot, and i hope to see ivy bridge being decently priced.

Yeah, but give it a year or two and all these problems you guys are talking about won't even exist. 6-8 core's will be typical and we will be seeing much higher clock speeds. It's a nice improvement still, even if it can't be completely utilized.
