Have you rang the police? That's the number one thing you should of done and made a list of the things they stole.
If you have insurance you should be able to get most the expensive items replaced like if they stole your TV.

I'm so sorry to here your dogs got poisoned, if someone had done that to my cat I would of tracked them down and hurt them, but as long as yourself and your family is alright material goods are always replaceable.
If you're scared about getting robbed again you should have extra protection around the house or if you're in a situation move to another house if you're in a bad neighborhood.

You need to file a police report. I am also sorry to hear about your animal. Fortunately non of your "human" family was hurt which should at least make the situation a bit easier. As for the things you may or may have not lost material wise just remember they can be replaced by going to the store.

May want to look into getting a burglary alarm system if you don't already have one...

I don't think his dog got poisoned; I think he is trying to say that getting a dog for protection is not a feasible option because people can poison them...

Yeah, he's looking for ways to secure his house as far as I can tell.

A good alarm system that's visable from the outside will appear to not be worth the hassle to most burglars.

Wow I hate people who steal, Lowlifes piggyback off others hard work and then they fucking killed your dogs? They need to be punished severely, If that was me I would hunt them down and kill them. Get a alarm or something for starters and sorry for your dogs man, I bet they were a big part of your life :(

Oh I apologize I mis understood. I would recommend getting a dog actually because it is still a deterrent people won't want to go to your house as much if you have a huge dog barking.

Any criminal with half a brain knows, to bring dog food, sneak in some poison/sleeping pills feed the dog.. What dog is gonna bark at someone offering them a good meal?

Meh, how about growing a set and when the people try rob your house defend yourself..

So are you saying that if someone had a few pit bulls that it wouldn't make someone think twice about breaking in? Yes it would. "Growing a set" and defending yourself doesn't do anything if you aren't home.

Try talking to your neighbours and see if they saw anything suspicious

Also putting stickers like "This house is monitored by community patrol, neighbors see things suspicious and they phone the police etc" all that nice touchy and feely bs actually are a cheap deterrent but you should obviously also look for a plan B like what people have said previously.

That's a great idea, tbh. An alarm system that's visible from the outside would be great, becuase no burglar will try to rob your house if they know for sure they're getting caught. Take a look at this: http://www.protection1.com/

That's not 100% true, my dog would NEVER accept food from a stranger and the main thing she would do is attack them.
I wouldn't suggest defending yourself either incase they're stronger/have a weapon such as a gun.

I would definitely invest in some kind of house alarm system. I don't know if you've ever heard of them but ADT is a pretty solid company.

You don't actually need to purchase a house alarm system.

Put a sign out front that says you have an alarm system.
Install a storm door. ( lockable metal door )
Install motion sensor lights ( 50$ max )
You can purchase fake video cameras ( 20$ )

Firearms are always a nice thing to have.

Generally if your house seems like its security is worth a shit then burglars will move on to easier targets.

    Edit:

If someone poisoned my dog I would probably shoot them.

My dog doesn't take food unless it's given by me, my brother or my parents :/ and she would probably take out a robber pretty fast if they kicked in the door. Dogs are only good security if they are trained to be guard dogs but even then the hassle of them biting a robber isn't really worth it because you are responsible if the damage is a lot, one of my friend's dogs took out 2 robbers and chased out the other 2 but the ones he caught were seriously injured, one lost half his ear and the other had severe punctures on his hand and most of his hand was torn apart by the dog, there were some more bites and scratches but nothing worse than these if my friend hadn't been there to stop the dog it probably would have killed one of them. In the end the dog was put down even though they broke in.

I recommend you just get a good alarm system and/or put cameras on the exterior of your house and just put a beware of dog sign even if you don't have one. I doubt anyone will even consider breaking into your house if all those potential barriers are there.

i can't tell if you are trolling or not....

if you aren't, then buy this:
    http://www.glockstore.com/glock-factory-handguns/glock-17-9mm

    Gen 4, 17 Round mag ($549)

It is a 9mm handgun, the recoil is manageable by almost everyone. After training with 200-300 rounds, you should feel fairly confident, however if you are in the robbery, your adrenaline will be pumping and you may miss, that is why you have a 17+1 (1 in the chamber) gun. You have 18 chances to hit the person, and a well placed shot (center mass) will put someone down, even if it is "only" a 9mm round. As for Gen 3 v 4, I recommend gen 4, it has better checkering that will prevent sweaty hands/recoil from throwing off your shot. If you are all comfortable with a 9mm (rent one before you buy at your local range), then you can try a .40, probably a Glock 22,
    http://www.glockstore.com/glock-factory-handguns/glock-22-40-caliber
With the Gen 4, you get 3 15 round magazines, but test this too before buying, as it is a thicker grip due to the double stacked magaize (to get you more ammo, 15+1, so 16 shots). This round you will find to have a slightly higher muzzle lift, and slightly higher recoil. However, you have a higher mass bullet that travels just slightly slower. Also .40 jacked rounds are more effective than 9mm jacked rounds.

If you need any other firearm assistance please let me know.

and remember, a hit with a 9mm is better than a miss with a .45!

Also, the sound of a gunshot can make a robber run in the other direction
