Well I'll try to make this as short as i can. I am 18 years old. The day i turned 18, i left home (not because i wanted to). Now i live with my girlfriend who is 17. Now most of you will find that hard to believe as i do myself because her dad is your typical dad that hates every guy that comes around his daughter but anywho. I just completed my first semester of college, majoring in computer networking and having a very high grade in it. I'm not a genius with computers but ive used them enough to know a little bit. Well my dilemma is this. Me and my girl have dated over a year now and lived together almost 7 months...Her dad is pushing me to stop going to college full time and take a job at the state prison making 32-35k a year. Now i live virginia where and teacher makes this much money so im wondering i should take this job and go to college part time or finish up college full time. My girlfriends dad was well known at the prison and says he can get me a job and that if i do that he will respect me more as a man and approve of me dating his daughter...which really would mean alot... please help :D
 
Ok, kiddo lol. I'm going to be blunt.

Through high school i dated a chick ever year, for the whole year. Been in 3 'serious' relationships. And now I'm married, at age 20 lol. Believe me, you will know if its right, but not yet. (Not saying true love cant be found at 18 for all you damn trolls) BUT, Don't let your 17 year old girlfriend's dad persuade you to take a shit job like that. Yea the pay isn't TOO bad for an 18 year old, BUT going to college will definitely help you excel more in like. If your gf's dad says your not a man because you won't waste your life away for 40g a year as a prison guard, then that shows the kind of man he is. Also I wouldn't compare what teachers make to anything, IMO thats the most underpaid profession of todays economy.

Finish up college mate, the job he is offering you will help for right now but later down the road do you want to be stuck there the rest of your life or do you want to go to college and have a lot of opportunities with jobs that pay a lot more.
 
College. I live in a area that making 32k a year is a lot. I got offered a job at 40k a year, and almost accepted it. I still think it would have been the worst decision of my life when I can move with a degree and be making 70k+
 
I don't see why you can't balance both work and school. My sister goes to university and she has two jobs.

Finish up with college.

Here is the reason why:
Sure, the money will be fine for the first few years, but then you're going to want more and that just won't happen.
 
I believe you should go ahead and finish school first. Perhaps try and balance both out if possible. I know somebody who actually went to college for a year, worked as a prison guard for a few years to make enough money to support him and his girlfriend and went back to college after working for about 4-5 years. I'm not too sure how good the pay is in Canada compared to there, though. But I say, if you WANT the job, go ahead and take it. If you want to finish college, do that. Overall, college would most likely give you more opportunities in life, though.

EDIT: My girlfriend use to live with me, and we were both 16... It's a long story, haha :P...

Finish college, full time. Work part time, as much as you can. As you get closer to graduation, try to line up a job for when you graduate so that when you do you will have a higher paying job right away, hopefully. Or at least a job that has more earning potential than the jail.
 
If i dont get a job, her dad will not allow me to date his daughter....also makin me homeless because i have no family....so remember that.

Aw hell no. Dont ruin your life like that. Finishing your bachelors is what your main priority should be. The fact that he even lets you in his house with his daughter proves he trusts you. Just keep doing what you want to do, and make him proud the way you want to. Not the way he asks.
 
Tell him that you appreciate the offer but that you want to finish college first. Simple as that. He has nothing to say, it's none of his business.
 
Your too young to have your future decided by a dick father (no offence.) He's not a very good person if he can only respect you if you do what he wants. Your only 18 and for all you know you might not be with this girl in the future. How would you feel being in this prison job if you were no longer with the girl.. would you always regret not finishing college?
 
you really need to have a talk with her dad and let him know you may ruin your life.
working in a prison is a dangerous job, try looking for more choices.
