xeL. Regulating other People's Outbound Volumes in Ventrilo

Hey its xeL. here, and today we're going to be looking at how to change your settings in Ventrilo so no one speaks too loud or too quiet. To achieve this, we will observe two different methods and you can choose which fits your situation best! Let's get started.

    Section 1: What is Ventrilo?

Briefly, Ventrilo is a popular VoIP program that is used in often in competitive gaming. You hear about it most often in relation to WoW Raids or scrims in CS1.6/CSS.

If you do not know what Ventrilo is or do not have it, visit their official website for downloads and more information: www.ventrilo.com

Section 2: Why is equalizing/regulating people's volume in Ventrilo important?

Let's face it. Everyone has different microphones, headsets, sound cards, equipment, voices, and tones. It's not going to be possible for everyone to receive each others speech at the same exact volume. Sometimes the difference is bearable. Other times, it's so drastic you want to scream. Luckily, Ventrilo has a few solutions for us.

Section 3: What are my options?

    Option One
Ventrilo has a feature that allows you to change the volume and other options of an individual's speech by adding filters and SFX (Sound Effects) to their profile. These filters will only apply for you; only you will hear the persons voice through the filters you applied.

    This is your ventrilo screen:

Right click on the users name, go to Misc > Special Effects

The option we're looking for is Volume
    [IMG]

Simply hit add and adjust volume to your preference.

To remove, just highlight your filter and hit "remove"

    Option Two
Ventrilo also allows us to add a filter called "Compressing." This filter is known to be extremely useful for automatically creating a generally equal volume for everyone in the server. It seems as if everyone has their own custom settings, so I will give you what me and my friends found to be the most efficient.

    Go to setup.

    Click on SFX

Add Compressor and use the settings provided below.

Most of the settings are widely known and spread. However I tend to move Release to 600, which works better for me and the people I've shown this to. I have seen people who also change their Threshold slightly higher or lower to achieve different results. This is by no means the ONLY way to dampen everyone's volume to the same level, but it is a general solution.

    Thank you for reading!

There's a way to perform the same compression with Teamspeak, but as far as I know the method is different and it involves a configurable sound card.
