    What's the point?

I've been thinking a lot about life lately. What's the point in video games, really? Why are there people who spend thousands of dollars buying accounts, items, and gold, when it serves no purpose in life?

To be honest, nothing lasts. All games will come to an end eventually, and you'll be sorry because you paid for virtual items, and it's not like you can get a refund for it, because it wasn't from the game makers themself.

In my opinion, video games just waste peoples time. They're fun for a while, but after, it just takes your life away.

I've been thinking about this for a very long time. I now realized that I'm going to slowly give up gaming, I'd rather get some real life cash, and then get a job. I will be selling my Xbox, domain names, Runescape accounts, etc. Although I will still bot accounts to sell. :)

What are your opinions on video games? Think long term, not the short time "they're fun!" answer.

Video games are good when people can play for about 30 minutes and then turn off system and find something else to do.

    What's the point?

But most people can't. Some of my friends have no other real friends, no life at all outside the gaming world.

    What's the point?

Why buy an expensive meal, why buy an expensive TV, why buy a pet, why buy anything besides necessities?

because they satisfy/entertain you for the time being.

    What's the point?

I mean to me it's just like life. There is no point, it's what you make it and in the end if it's fun, then do it.

    What's the point?

Thousands of dollars though on pixels.

I understand buying expensive stuff in real life. But with the internet, anything can happen. What happened if you buy 100m on Runescape, and a week later, Jagex shuts down Runescape? You won't be refunded, because you bought it from some random person who will probably now run (Obviously I know Jagex wouldn't shut down Runescape anytime soon, but it's just an example).

In real life, you know your items can't just disappear because a company decides to shut down. In real life, if someone steals from you, you know who they are, you can do something about it. On video games, you have nothing.

I understand that it's fun for people to play video games. I personally have a lot of fun playing them. But at the end of the day, wouldn't it be better to buy food, clothes, a house? Get a girlfriend, get married, have kids? Have friends, party, and hang out?

I know most gamers still have social lives, but there are still many that don't, because of video games.

    What's the point?

Life is short; If playing video games entertains someone, and if they enjoy playing them, then the decision is up to them.

Yeah I definitely agree with you about buying virtual items; I don't do that. I just find video games to be equal to any other form of entertainment and nothing is wrong with them IMO as long as they don't take over your life.

    What's the point?

That's exactly my point in my thread, people should not let video games take over their lives.

    --

Back when I played video games all the time, I was addicted, and couldn't stay off them. I barely slept tbh. That's not healthy for anyone, and a lot of people are much worse than I was. They're far more addicted.

    What's the point?

Why should it need a long term reason? Just like any other entertainment source, its there to entertain you when you decide to use it.. not everything you spend money on has to have long term benefits

    What's the point?

For teenagers who spend thousands on video games, don't you think that it would be more wise to save it for something that they can use in the future, or that they actually need? Such as a house, food, clothes, education?

    What's the point?

You're telling us to think long term for video games when nobody does. Not even the designers themselves. They don't plan on their game lasting a single year with all the advancements that come out annually. It's all to satisfy our inner desire to realistically simulate what we wish we could do in real life. If there were no video games, what outlet would so many people have for their anger. In those games, they can kill all the people they want and it's fine. If those video games weren't there, I have a feeling people would replace what they do in those games for what they do in real life.

If it makes you happy, do it. Simple as that. Video games make me happy so I play them. It helps me calm down and I'd rather be playing a video game than in a gang or something (extreme, I know).

When you go to a rock concert, it doesn't benefit you 10 years down the road, however the rock concert was hella fun while it lasted.

    What's the point?

People value things differently than you do. Getting married and kids may be your main goal in life, but to some people, having 1000000000gp is an even better goal. If pursuing this goal brings them happiness and doesn't harm you in the process, then you should be happy too and leave them alone.

people spend money on "pixels" all the time though. Photoshop, Solidworks, MS Office, even Windows are all pixels. so whats the problem?

i understand where your coming from with the whole "taking your life away" thing because whenever you play games time just flies by and you suddenly don't have any time left for anything else.

On the contrary, what do you suggest we do?

its not like i'm not going anywhere in life because I play runescape so i dont know why people feel the need to associate the two

Because it's something to do at first, then it becomes an addiction.
