    It's been said that the width rule doesn't matter that much unless it pushes over the edge of the page.

    The width of the pages is defined by the width of your computer screen my love. So should I have a smaller computer screen, then that signature could very well stretch the browser window - hence the limit on the signature size, as it prevents this from happening to anyone (Unless they have a ridiculously small screen).
