This one's going to be a little hard for me to explain, so please bear with me.

I've always wondered - how do I know so much about computers in comparison to some others?

Things like how to adjust certain settings, where everything is located, setting up programs etc. Just basic knowledge that alot of us are aware of.. almost like a second nature?

I hope you understand what I mean. Things like what the taskbar is, the system tray, the start button, program files, you get the idea. When people ask me where/what some of these things are, I think to myself, 'Where have you been the past decade?'

    Here's an example:

If you can understand what I mean, discuss..

That guy you were talking to is probably 6 years old... I have the basic knowledge, but my brother has a lot more.

Er, basic knowledge, however not everyone has this basic knowledge. It's like fashion, did you know blue was an offset color for white?

I didn't, because I just bullshitted for an example.

    He's 13.
I know that's pretty young, but in this day and age most teenagers spend the majority of their lives on computers.
I would of thought that he would of known what the task bar was.

You also need to consider that he might have a different name for the taskbar, tell him the blue thing next to the start button. He'll be liek "IDK, MY BFF JILL?"

If you've been using computers for a while you just tend to pick up the kind of knowledge. I've been using computers for 12 years, while I may not have actually taken a real interest in them until maybe 8 years ago, I've picked up a lot of general computer skills and tend to be able to help people out with a lot of basic computer issues, yet I still don't consider myself an expert.

I see where you're coming from I guess, but that was just an example.
I suppose after using computers for such a long time, alot of it just seems so simple. Like anything, really. After a while, you think "Damn, how did I struggle with that".

    Hmph.

    EDIT:
Just saw this post after I posted this ^

Kinda sums up what I'm trying to say I guess. Soon enough I'm sure the majority of the world (MEDC's, that is) will be confident with using computers, after all, it seems they are the future.

I think I'm pretty able with computers. I can nearly always fix any problems my family or friends have with their computers, and in the event that I can't fix it and it has to be sent away, I can normally predict what will have to be done to fix it. I wouldn't say I was an expert at all, but I consider myself to have a level of knowledge above what is considered average.

Same as me, really. I'm constantly having to sort out my mums laptop as she is pretty much useless with technology. I've 'fixed' a few of my friends computers before also, but what was necessary in order to get in working properly again was what I would see as common knowledge, although in their eyes it is 'pro skills'.

Oh shit this definitely has been happening all of my life. My parents tell everyone I'm a computer whiz, simply because I know how to rebuild a computer. I know how to repair hardware, applications and set up networks. I can also bypass filters and firewalls. This shit is like amazing to other people. They are mostly from a generation where computers weren't advanced enough to learn how to engineer the technology of one.

Indeed. My family get really suprised when I know how to fix their basic problems, it's quite funny to see their reactions, and the look on their faces when you open control panel >_<

I know what you mean, whenever I 'fix' the computer my mum is like 'Wow, I don't know what I would do without you. You're so good with computers, its amazing'. Normally I'm just like 'Mum, I turned it on. It's not a miracle :L'
