How to tell family and friends I have cancer

Well title says it all...
I currently have prostate cancer.
only my father and myself know about it (plus my doctor)

My father has told no one and said its for me to do, but I really don't know how to do it...

 

Is there any reason your family would be angry for telling them?

I think you should just bite the bullet and tell them, after all you haven't done anything wrong.

 

That's terrible news for you to hear, I'm sorry. I'm willing to bet it'll be extremely difficult to tell your loved ones the news. I don't blame you for not telling them yet, but you do have to tell them eventually.

Prostate cancer is very treatable, tell them that, keep a positive attitude and keep a strong foundation not only for your family, but for yourself.

Also my girlfriend who iv been seeing for over a year now..

I don't want them to be upset.
or worry..
and dont really know how to get over this..

I myself am not worried, I really have had time to think about it, and accept death if its on its way..
but yes it is treatable..

They will still worry, and dont believe they will take it well.

 

But you haven't done anything wrong and you will need their support, why wouldn't they take it well? Obviously they'll be distraught, but the longer you leave it the worse they will be.

 

No, I haven't done anything wrong, but how would you feel if you found out a close family member had cancer...
They wont take it well because there is a possibility that I might die..
and knowing that you could lose someone close to you isn't the best thing in the world

 

My dad died of cancer when I was twelve, I know what it's like to have someone in your family go through this.

You have to tell them, soon. The longer you wait the harder the shock will be when you tell them, and you absolutely need their support to go through with this.

If you are having trouble, or you have younger siblings, ask your dad to tell them before you do. Believe me, you absolutely have to tell them about this.

Just sit down with them and explain what is happening, and what your doctor is planning to do about it.

If you're nervous, ask your dad if he could tell them.

 

I understand they will be devastated, but this isn't the sort of thing that you keep to yourself. You've got to let your family and girlfriend know. How would you like it if your girlfriend suddenly announces that she has cancer when she's almost dead?

You've got to tell them all so they can prepare for the worst, and support you in the difficult times to come.

I think you should call all your family together for a family conference. Just inform them all you've got some very serious news you'd like to share. When they're all there, just tell them "The doctor says I've got cancer".

They'll probably start crying at this point. You can cheer them up with the fact that prostate cancer is curable

 

Do what necro has suggested. If you can't get your dad to tell them.

There is no 'How to' with things like these... it just must be done, better sooner than later. Sure they will be devastated but having them there with you is the greatest support one needs when trying to beat this.

If 'God forbid' something terrible happened, I would be more devastated finding out after what the cause was.

 

You must let your family know, because if they find out themselves, you'll know that you've rather of told them, and its important.

get your dad there when you tell them
so if you can't do it he can help you out.

 

Best way, Is to sit them down (your whole family) and tell them straight out. Also tell them that the survival rate of prostate cancer is VERY high.
