Retrieving an IP from an email?

I will soon receive an email from a person with a yahoo email account. I recall reading somewhere how you can find the IP address of where the email was sent from, but cant find the guide. Any help?

If you are using the new Yahoo (I am assuming you are)

    1. Look for the Compact Header/Standard Header drop down
    2. Select Full Header
    3. Search for "Received: from"

Note: If there is more than one IP after the given phrase then the last one listed is the IP of the sender.

Just figure out how to see full headers on your current email account. Search google / msn help for how tos.

HOWEVER, you will only get the IP address of the yahoo(or sent) SMTP server. You will not get the sender's IP address. In case of serious discussion, yahoo will most likely have the sender's IP address logged but will probably only give it to the authorities. So if it is not a case to contact the authorities, don't bother sorry.

It's pretty much the same procedure.

    1. Sign in.
    2. Select the message then right click on the message you want to check
    3. Select View Source
    4. Search for "Received: from"
    5. Follow on from yahoo instructions :)

by the way it doesn't matter who you are receiving the message from it could be hotmail, gmail or any other mail service.

You right click > View message source > Look for Received: from ... and you should see the original IP.

Again like I stated though, I believe it would send you the IP address from the sending server. When you send email, it goes thru yahoo, then yahoo sends it to your inbox. This means that the sender will be yahoo, therefore the IP will be yahoo's servers.
