My mom is encouraging me to get a summer job, I have never had one as I don't really need one, but I am just wondering what jobs you guys have had? If I get one I don't want it to be somewhere lame like at a fast food restaurant. I might see if I can hang out at Club Penguin (unpaid) just to see what they do and maybe get better at java, graphics, etc. (their offices are half an hour away from me). So do you guys have any suggestions?

Just start out small (most of the time being fast food) and work your way up.

Fast food is such a dead-end job though, and it doesn't really teach you anything :(

It gives you money and is something to put on your resume, which is in fact quite useful.

In the past, I have worked at a bar doing dishes, and done construction with my dad over summers.

Good point about the resume. And doing dishes wouldn't be so bad, neither would construction, although I'm probably not strong enough to do any heavy lifting :/

You have to start somewhere, buddy. Don't feel entitled to something better when you probably don't have a high school degree. ;)

Not necessarily anything "better", just something other than fast food if possible :)

    Summer jobs?

I started working when I was 15, part time at a local YMCA. I'm still working here two years later without so much as a raise, albeit I did get better hours... but it's still a good job so my advice is to find something laid back for your first job. I sit in a room and watch kids play video games and computers and occasionally help them with homework alllllll day and get paid almost 9 dollars an hour for it, point being, jobs like that are out there, just start scouting for them, generally non-profit organizations like YMCAs like to hire disposable teens for their programs... but you also have to be careful about getting roped into a bunch of voluteer shit that they make you do.

It is but everyone starts out with jobs they don't like. But hey maybe you could snag a job at best buy or something.

You can try the movie theater, they are always hiring, you meet alot of people, and the people working there will be your age.

    Thanks, sounds pretty easy :)
True, I wouldn't mind working somewhere in the back, since wouldn't have to deal with customers ;) Thanks Gohan.
Thanks JP, I think my friends were looking into working there a while back, it would be a pretty good job. You also don't have to do much in between movies :)

If your interested in making more cash, look into wharehouse jobs, loading and unloading trucks. pay can range from 15-20$/hour starting.

I suggest the movie theater idea. That's where a majority of the kids from my school work and they say it's pretty easy.

The only issue you might run into is getting hours. Movie theaters are notorious for hiring tons of people and dishing out as few hours to each person.

Work in a resturant kitchen. Honestly, washing dishes is the best job ever. Most resturants have chill chefs and cooks. You can basically eat all you want and the time goes by quick. You make tips and the summer time brings in plenty of people going out to eat. I did it for two years and I regret leaving to work for CVS.

Working in a shoe store like footlocker or something would be good. You basically politely ask if the customer needs help and get the shoes they need, besides that you just check inventory or little things here and there.

Go intern or volunteer for a hospital. Always looks good on college applications/resumes.

Working at a shoe place will be real boring unless youre a cashier or something. Be a waiter or work with a relative and help around the store.
