    Solar power on a boat?

    Hey, I was just wondering...

If I had solar panels on a boat, could it turn the salt water into normal drinking water? (using the water taps, convert it somehow? I doubt it, but I'd like to ask anyway)

How much would the solar panel costs? (roughly?)

And could they provide electricity for a cooker/microwave and fridge?

Any flamming/spamming will be reported

    Solar power on a boat?

It all depends on how much power you want, the sunlight you have, and how much room to work with. Expensive panels or more efficient for the space given, and probably more ideal for a boat.

    1. Salt water to drinking water, of course, and there are many methods. The most obvious is just boiling the water and filtering out the steam. There are probably more efficient methods though.

    2. Calculate how much electricity each of your items consumes per hour and compare that to the output of the panel you want to buy...

    Solar power on a boat?

Why couldn't it be possible? It can generate energy while out at sea day.

Jay, Just how big is this boat first?

Solar panels are quite expensive as well.

You can generate quite a bit of power with them, though it depends on how many you have really and what the size of the panels are.

    Solar power on a boat?

I know it's possible, some people who were kayaking from Australia to New Zealand used it to desalinate their drinking water.

You may want to search from there.

Desalination isn't too difficult, but it is a long process. They do it on navy ships and such, so it's possible.. as for having solar panels... well, it'd be a bit difficult setting it up, and stuff, and making a boat that is well balanced nd stuff.

I don't think the solar panels are even necessary for water distillation. There are many more cost effective methods and solar panels are really expensive.

Yeah, you could easily use solar panels to generate electricity. Not sure how much they would cost, but I am guessing they will be fairly expensive.
As for converting salt water into fresh water, I would probably use something like this:
    http://www.purplemarine.com/Product.aspx?ProductCode=OC-SOLARSTILL

Alternatively, you could use one of those jugs that distils water for you automatically.
