To switch between a private server and retail each time you want to play it. Don't want to mess things up if I start playing on a private server when I'm bored.

Yes. Go to Data in WoW folder, go to enUS then find realmlist. open with notepad and change between private server/real wow.

The best and safest thing to do, is to make a copy of your WoW folder in another location on your computer, and use one for private servers and one for retail.
