    Spelling and Grammar

Sometimes spelling and grammar on the internet can be a rather controversial topic.

Well, what do you think? How do you respond to people who follow the social meme and trim their words to perversions of the English language such as "u", "r", "wat" and so on? How do you respond to people who incomprehensibly word their sentence?

Personally, as long as it is understandable, I can tolerate it, however it doesn't endear the writer to me.

    Discuss.

    Spelling and Grammar

I can not stand it! I'm fine with some words not being spelled correctly, but when they shorten words to "u" "r" "wat" and so on i go crazy.

When I talk via text and AIM I do not use those words as I honestly never had ( With the exception of when I was 10-11 ). Yes, many people comment me when I talk to them by text and IM, but that's because they are too lazy to take the extra TWO seconds to add an extra letter.

This would depend on: Age, education, place of origin.

If I know the person, I can not stand it. If the person is young, under-educated, or English is not their first language it is fine with me.

I personally abbreviate when I txt but I don't do it when i'm typing. I'm to lazy when I'm txting lol and when i'm typing it is so fast a couple of words makes about 2 seconds difference. So I don't do it while I type.

It's just internet slang, I find it when your having a short conversation over IRC/MSN/AIM, or anywhere else, yeah its fine.

If you are having an intelligent conversation with some people on a thread/forum perhaps, then no its just annoying.

Commonly accepted shortenings and small misspellings don't bother me alone, but when there are like 20 of them in a post somebody wrote, that's when it's annoying.

When it keeps moderate and it's understandable, it's ok.
But when it goes too far and people begin talk like this, it's irritating.

Actually these sorts of posts bother me more than the "u, r, wat, etc" posts. Instead of saying "I can't stand it" , like common English vernacular would have, you chose to say "I can not stand it", which just sounds retarded.

I'm not a grammar expert and don't care so much about grammar, but most of the posts in this topic are loaded with grammatical errors.

Agreed, those don't bother me as much as "i can not" instead of "i can't".

L bothers me a lot now, just add o and l and make it "lol".

That's not what he's saying. "Can't" is proper grammar. He's talking about when people says "w8 4 me" instead of "Wait for me".

In most cases, I try to use good grammar as much as possible. I even use online dictionaries if I think something doesn't sound well.

As for internet "grammerz", I don't really mind it. What I do mind, is that people don't use interpunction. I can read it, but it's annoying as fuck.
Little things to make typing easier, like ur, sup, wtf, etc are not really that big of a deal, because I don't always feel like typing shitload of words.

GRAMMAR NAZIS FTW? I hate it when people don't use proper grammar. It annoys me so much. if they say they can't spell a word their lieing because whilst I'm typing here if i mistype a word you can right click it for other options of the word. So yes, I hate it when people don't use grammar or punctuation.

    That's not what I'm saying.

What I'm saying is that it bothers me when people use uncommon or pompous vernacular on the forums. The alternative would just be typing normally or in a conversational manner...

I'm just saying that one has to intentionally type in "can not" instead of "can't" in that context because I don't know anyone in their right mind who says "I CAN NOT STAND THIS".

I can stand reading this sort of slang in text messages, but on the internet it's a different story. Still, it doesn't bother me alot when it's just a conversation or on IM. If it is incomprehensible, it just insults the person's intelligence from my point of view.

Frankly, it's the internet. As long as you can understand what they are trying to say then does it really matter. Just because you use words like "u" and "r" doesn't make you uneducated or insuperior in any way. I think people need to get over it.

    Spelling and Grammar

I'm not so harsh on spelling as I am the structure of the sentence. Quite frankly, I can't understand what half the little fucks are saying a majority of the time. I just nod my head at my computer, as if they could see me.

I don't see why they do it in the first place. I can type much faster than a majority of them, even while using correct grammar to their mindless dribble. Just get acquainted with the keyboard, kids. You'll learn to love it.

I used to type using "u" and "r" but I soon decided that it wasn't the best idea to get used to doing. I started to type it in school papers, which turned out very badly...
