this is just a thought... and just for educational purposes not to actually do...
but i thought id quit WoW for good and sold my account to a mate but now i want to play again, if i get a new account he'll let me have one of my lvl 70's. i dont really have the money to buy WoW and both expansion packs. hypotheticly, if i were to go into a shop while holding my phone, open the disc case and take a photo of the serial code then use that, would i be able to use that authentification code AND would i get caught somehow? not that i'd do it or anything

Yes, it would work but there is a chance you could get caught if the person who bought it after you decided to report it or something.
You could bring a marker or something so the CD key isn't visible after you take the picture.

 

I think the game might have to be scanned before the code is active.

 

Any store that sells it now scans it for activation for that very purpose.
