Time Travel. Is It Possible?

Time travel is a concept much loved by science fiction writers, and Star Trek fans, but is it possible within the known laws of physics?

Since the Begining Of the 20th century, Time Travel has been labled a possibility. Yet has someone come out with a formula in which to cause time travel.

There are 4 types of time travel;
1. Viewing the past

2. Participating in the past

3. Viewing the future

4. Participating in the future

The Definition of Time is
''The passage From One moment to another"

So Is It Possible for Someone to alter or get through this passage? Will we in future be able to change the past?

I believe that if they set up some sort of system such as a chip in your brain, ect. You may be able to view the past, past the point where you got the chip of course, but not alter it in any way. As for the future, i highly doubt that becuase how would you look into something and see its gonna happen. And if you do believe in time travel to the future, you would have to believe that your life has already been planned. I do believe that but i'm just saying.

 

I think that you could change what happens in different times, but only to yourself.. like err... taking something and editing it, so to you it is different but stays the same really

exactly, imagine people coming and telling us they were alive 300 years ago, it isn't possible because time we can only live in the present

But what if time-travel were limited to trained operatives sworn to secrecy?

In more shows than not nowadays that include time-travel, the time-traveller generally doesn't reveal their identity to everyone.

Time travel is impossible because there is no such thing as "time". Time is an abstract term made up by man. The only way of time travel is the good old fashion one, one second at a time.

 

Theoretically, it might be possible to travel into the future. Sort of. Apparently, in Einstein's theory of (special?) relativity, he says (with a lot of mathimatical calculations, I'm sure) that the closer you get to the speed of light, the slower you move. So, your time would be passing slower then real time. I think its called "time dialation".

Also, a proven theory states that mass distorts time. The closer you are to a large mass, the slower time moves. What I mean by proven is, two atomic clocks were set to the exact time as one another. One kept on earth, one put on a shuttle. When the shuttle came back, the space one was (by very little) faster then the one kept on earth. One scientist speculated that inside a blackhole, where gravity is almost infinite, time comletely stops in our eyes. NOT and abstract term made up by man. =)

 

That could be because the initial flow of time has not reached the point as of yet where people are able to travel through time.

Say you are a boat with no engine in a fast flowing river. There is a boat with a strong engine further down stream.

Your goal is to go back up the stream. But to do that you need to go down streem first and reach the boat with an engine to go up stream.

 

It may actually be possible to exploit wormholes in the future, but I doubt mankind will ever succeed, as wormholes are incredibly rare and unstable. You might very well just end up billions of billions of galaxies away with no way of returning.

First, we need to establish whether time is parallel universes/alternate timelines. If it is, time travel wouldn't cause paradoxes such as killing yourself as a baby (which would cause you to never grow up, thus never travel back in time and kill yourself).

If it isn't, just ONE small change may affect everything we know today. Yes, splatting a mosquito could very cause a chain reaction that completely changes the world as we know it.

I think mankind will be extinct before we ever reach that technological stage where bending quantum mechanics is probable for the following reasons:
1) We havn't had any visitors from the future.
2) The paradox.
3) Time is possibly a man-made subject.

 

wrong. if you believe in time travel then the future has already happened, then they would have already came back to the past, or for us the present. For it to work the way you explain it then if you go back you would be in a different dimension.

Also, time travel is impossible. time is only a measurement. The time is always NOW, time is a constant. the past doesnt exist.

its only possible to go forward, but you cannot go back. As you approach the speed of light time for you slows down, so when you come back from your near speed of light trip everyone would have aged alot faster.

 

It wouldnt change anything as it would have already happened. Its a never ending loop. Proof that time travel NEVER happens in the future is because we havnt seen anyone from the future.

And we cannot travel to the past because it doesnt exist.

 

they can already do that during your sleep by submitting you to electrical pulses and feeding your brain different pictures etc.

quite a good little bit of words there, makes me almost believe it could happen.

But it cannot for the simple facts that.

A. In order to do this you would have to break down the molecular structure of the said person you would like to send to the past or future, then what... you can't re put them together because it would be impossible for them to be the same person as our bodies are in a constant state of evolution.

B. Making something go that fast or in such a negative speed would take an immense amount of energy which would be insanely unstable and would not work and if the theory of Einstein is true about the faster to the speed of light you are the slower it is then it would be impossible to move to the future because the speed we are at now is absolute there is nothing faster.

C. Ripping a hole in the fabric of time would lead to a black hole by the standards that were presented in the posts above in which the earth would be sucked into the black holes vortex thus voided into infinite darkness essentially causing the earths downfall and mankind's extinction.

But what we could and can do now is put someone in a coma via pills etc. for how ever long and during that time use shock treatment along with subliminal picturing and video's to make your mind recreate what ever visions are displayed in the video's and pictures. But that is the closest we will ever get to time travel. that is without the death of the human race.

i dont think that it would be possible. think about it, if i went back in time what would happen to my normal time? also what would happen to everyone else if multiple people were doing it.

 

We still havn't established whether time consists of infinite alternate dimensions each representing 0.0000000000000000000000000001% of a nano-second (random estimation) or a simple one-way direct line. If it does, one change in the middle-ages wouldn't effect todays society, as it would be a different, yet parallel dimension.

Wormholes work as gateways, and once their existence has been empirically observed and confirmed, we can begin performing actual experiments with time. This would be incredibly dangerous though, as it might just suck you in and spit you out billions of billions of billions of galaxies away. So far away from human civilization that even radio contact is out of the question.

 

Well, if you watch Heroes, Hiro the space shifter, time traveler and space bender can do anything with time. In fact, he participated in the future and travel back to the present moment. I know what yall thinking, this is just a tv show. However, some people can really make it true. Also, one question still circling in my head is that where the fuck is the guy in if he is time travelling.
