Lol, I recently decided to try and attempt matte painting, so here's what I have so far. (comments&feedback would be appreciated, but don't make it too mean xD).
Little warmup I did. I put two kids in my journalism class in the picture (one of them is a singer, and the other is the President of the Eco-Club at my school, so I kinda decided to combine them.) The only real matte painting here is just the buildings in the BG:

This one is where I actually start to kinda get serious. I've been working on it for at least four hours now. I left my MacBook on the desk in my Journalism class, so lots of kids came and took pictures of themselves with Photobooth. So when I came back I found a really funny looking one and decided to use that as a starting point:
I found a background and started painting the body, bottom, and head thing with a circle brush set with the "Other Dynamics" set to Opacity: Pen Pressure. I sampled colors from the BG. Then I found some stock images of wires and stuff and put those in.

Then I painted some textures in using a grunge brush with the same settings as above, and added more stock parts. I also started blocking out the back.

I kinda changed my mind about having big buildings and realized I forgot to put perspective grids in, so I deleted it and started over. I also put a road in. I think the perspective grid is a little off. I'm still getting the hang of things. But yeah this is where I am now. I think I'll stop for today and take a break xD:

Oh, and it's titled "Boss-Journalist" because that's the "Editor in Chief" of the Journalism class.
