    The Sythe IRC access list is monstrously big. Seriously, there are a metric fuckton of ops/halfops, most of whom;
    a) do not need access
    b) cannot use IRC effectively

This, obviously, has to be rectified, so post your opinions on how we can trim the access list to leave only the qualified and useful people in power.

The best suggestion so far (Suggested by DarbySniper), is a kind of quiz for operators.

The idea is that if you are, for instance, +o in #sythe, and only know about the powers a +h would use, then there's little reason for your elevated access. Same goes for IRCops who only use loper powers, or even none at all.

The tests will likely consist of a live demonstration of what you would do in various situations, and explain why. IRCop demonstrations will be similar.

Passing our test does not guarantee you access or guarantee you a promotion. Everyone who has access will be tested.

I say to monitor how most ops act in the irc, without them knowing you are watching them. If you see them not using their extra powers in the right way, de-op them. Oh and cut all the people who are only on 1-2 times a week or are idle alot.

So instead of a 5 minute test, you think that weeks of stalking, during which, a time may never arise where an op/oper will need to use their powers, and base the decision on that?

I like Darby's suggestion of the quiz, it really sounds like that will separate those that require it and can be useful from those that are unnecessary.

Also, it should be somewhat based on maturity and judgment (ie: how the person acts in general and handles different situations). No more half-oping 14 year olds who abuse when they are "bored" please (*cough* Denial *cough*)...

I particularly like the test idea. As Darby and Shin had said, you should create a sandbox channel, create a problem that you should be able to handle with your status, and have them solve it.

How about you fucking remove the access of all non staff, with an exception of a select few rather than randomly removing peoples access. I laugh at your attempts to be all serious with a "test"

To be fair, being staff does not imply a good knowledge of IRC.

Forums and IRC aren't directly related, I don't see why IRC Staff should be limited to forum staff and/or specifically given to all members of forum staff.

Yet if you hadn't been included in the select few they decided to "randomly remove" all would have been fine and dandy I'm quite sure.

Okay, test it is. Passing does not guarantee your spot, maturity helps.

Shin, Darby, and myself (along with anyone else who would like that has significant IRC knowledge) can do tests (Me or Shin MUST be present during the tests or they do not count).

The idea seems good, and i agree there are way to many operators etc, It will also bring opportunity to other mIRC users.

Still, passing the test will not mean that you automatically become part of the IRC staff, it's still to their discretion (Shawn/Shin presumably). Also, I'm quite sure they will be keeping it down to a much more reasonable number than before.

In addition to that you could maybe add in a script that counts the times joined, lines written etc. and when the times joined/lines written reaches a certain point it messages all the Ops, just a suggestion.

EDIT: and of course some kind of script that won't count the times joined/lines written if time between them is <1 sec?

What do you mean? You want me to log the amount of lines people do and see how active they are?

We are one step ahead of you :)

Yea, basically, it means less work for the ops.

EDIT: I could help you out if you need some help with it.

Hmm... I'm not too fond of the idea of completely monitoring the activity of ops, as long as they are on consistently, I don't want to set a benchmark.

Who says it's for Ops? My idea was more towards the normal users/HOps, you can watch how they're doing, give them a promotion if they deserve it.
