Racial Equality or Inequality in America

This thread has been changed to the question of racial inequality in America. What do you think? Is everyone Equal regardless of skin color? Do we all receive the same opportunities in life? When addressing your opinion, be sure to discuss what you perceive as racial equality, and how you feel America has treated this. I guess the question is; How far have we come?

Everyone has their own opinions and I respect that. It is not against the law to be a racist - it is against the law to discriminate. I don't think anything is wrong with being racist. Do whatever you like, as long as you don't harm anyone. As long as you are not in a position of authority, where your racism affects those that you are racist against.

What is wrong with being racist?

If statistics show that some races on average are less intelligent or commit for crimes than others what is wrong with avoiding people of that race? If there are 6 billion people in this world and only a few races and ethnicities what is wrong with using statistics to narrow down your search for finding decent civilized human beings because you will never get to individually know everyone on this planet.

It's not really a major problem. Yes, there is still racism, but it's mainly due to lingering sentiments of hatred, and social conditioning that causes us to think "These groups are lazy and have higher crime rates".

 

I believe that there is definetly racial equality in America today. I mean look back at the Civil Rights Movements and all the activists? compared to now? the other races are right in with us.

Racism is in everyone but we wont accept it. This is just a way to take out your anger one someone even though its terribly wrong.

 

Personally, I dont think the definition of racism is actually a correct definition I define racism as something people used to better themselves especially durinng a life crisis... The real thing that crosses my eye and tends to get on my nerves, is why african americans get angry at the word negro and white people seem to take no offense in cracker... I guess its a matter of personal ego.

I guess its not racist to hate white people but it is to hate black people :/

Niger? Thats not racist. Try finding its origin, I was quite surprised to see how it developed.

 

Yeah, I laughed. Then I said "nigger", it's just a word, people need to calm down.

Racism itself isn't bad. I mean.... racial stereotypes didn't come out of thin air. No one said "Hey! Lets all say that Jews are tight with their money. That'd be funny!". Most stereotypes are generally true. It may be unfair to those people who don't live up to the stereotype, but that's life.
If I were trying to get a job working with children, I'd fully expect a woman with the same qualifications to get the job instead of me considering women are trusted more with such things.
Racial-based hate, and crimes birthed from it, are what's bad.

 

regarding nigger, thats just sad.. I think the majority of people who say it are black.. So if they have such a problem with it, they should stop using it in all there rap music. And racism itself ISNT bad. Its all the hatred them sometimes stems from it that is bad.

 

Racism is caused by several reasons such as the hatred that was back when there was slavery.

Another factor that causes slavery can be the way a group of people's attitude towards people, and people makes assumptions about that group of peoples, based on the ethnicity of what most of them might be.

Also, being an immigrant, my parents are very paranoid and, of course, scared of a certain race. I try my best to make them see that only people that wish to act the way they do makes a bad example, not the whole race of people.

Okay well.
First off all- Im sure a lot of racists hate you as well. We don't care about your hate.
Secondly- Not all racists are homosexuals. And even if there are some, so what? There are non-racist homosexuals too. Homophobic?
And third- You aren't worth my sig space.

 

Racism hurts man.. I am from South Africa so I have a lot of personal experiance with it. My uncle is crazy and he wont even shake an african american persons hand. Also i hate it when people say "Your from Africa.. Why arent you black" Yes i know its from a movie but people do say it. And racism is a big problem in america if you watch the movie crash. But it depends how people take to their racism. IF they harm others then its bad. But if they dont do anything to them and keep it to themselfs then it is ok. It all depends on how you take it and how you deliver it.

 

It's not skin color anymore I think. Now It's religon. People these days are racist to muslims. I'm one of them, I know what it feels like. I get called "terrorist" and "bomber" by kids at school and some people who live by me.

Dude the way they treat me is total racial harassment, like when Saddam Hussein got hung people were like ahh.. I heard your daddy got hung and I said to that white kid : Your white daddy Bush invaded too weak defenseless countries and had millions of innocent women and children killed how come He didn't get hung?

 

Too bad that didn't happen. Maybe you should step away from Muslim propaganda and accept the facts. It also sounds like you're supporting Saddam. Fool.

But anyways: Racism is an issue in our society. Back until the 60's and 70's most of white America was racist (and they continue to be). Now Africian Americans are also taking racist stands. I live in Cincinnati. I don't know if anyone knows anything about Cincinnati, but just to put it in a nutshell for you all...we have had several race based incidents which led the city into turmoil and riots.

But I mean when you look at racism the root of the problem lyes in ignorance and the fact that our society is not very reacialy integrated despite recent attempts to unify us all.

It's lame and pointless. At the end of the day we're all human and we're all in it together despite religion, race, sex, etc. We need to treat people with respect and make no attempt to harm their dignity.

 

America has clearly moved along nicely in equal rights.

Slavery>civil rights>now

There are still hate groups out there like the KKK etc. who are after certain groups. But as a whole i would say that now in america there are equal rights.
