How to Install a New HDD
or
Setup Master/Slave HDD's

Prelude


Bought a new Hard Disk Drive (HDD) latley? Found an old 20GB Maxtor lying around, gathering dust? You can take advantage of this by installing the new drive yourself, or setting up a Master/Slave Drive!


What You Need


Here's what you will need;

1. New/Old HDD
   
2. Screwdriver
3. Digital Camera
4. Spare Molex Power Connector (For master/Slave)
   
5. Spare IDE Secondary Connection (For Master/Slave)
   
6. Mounting screws
   

GettingReady

It's now time to get down the the nitty gritty, and install the thing! If you need screwdrivers, have them ready.

• Shutdown the computer

• Turn off the power to the whole system

• Unplug the Tower from all cables

• Lay the Tower on a hard, flat surface. Surfaces such as concrete or tiles are preferred, but if it's a must, carpet will do

• Make sure the Tower is the right way up, so when the cover is taken off the Main board and components are facing the right way up

• Take off the cover to the Tower, use the screwdrivers if your Tower has screws

• Memorize where everything goes. At this stage it can be handy to take a few quick snaps with the digital camera, just so you know where everything goes/plugs into

• Touch a non-painted metal surface to get rid of any static build up

RemovingThe Old Drive


Now it's time to remove the old drive, and install your new HDD.

• Locate the HDD, it will probably be in some sort of Drive Bay like this;

This bay has two slots, one for a Master Drive, one for Slave Drive;


- If you are installing a Slave HDD, skip to "Installing the Slave"

• Gently pull out the IDE Ribbon Cable(1)(leaving it in the Main Board Controller Port) and the Molex Power Clip(2), as seen in this picture;

• Using the screwdriver, unscrew any screws that are holding the drive in the bay (some bays may use a two+ pins that you pop up)(You can take out the whole cage if you think it will help, just screw it back in the end)

• Slide the drive out and place it on a flat, clean surface, making sure you don't touch the exposed underside

- If you are installing a new HDD, and not a Master/Slave, skip to "Plugging in the Drive"


Setting The Jumpers

This part is for anyone installing a Slave HDD. A Slave HDD is another HDD that you connect to the Grey IDE Controller Cable, that runs on the Secondary Channel (as you would expect, the Master Drive runs on the Primary Channel). To set up the Master/Slave Drives, the jumpers on the HDD's must be set to the correct settings.

• Look on the back of your Slave HDD where the IDE and power cables were unplugged

The white rectangles circled in the red area is the Jumper Pins, they slide onto Male pins (yep, you guessed it, male because they're like a penis). On top, or back as in this case, of your HDD there should be some sort of sticker proclaiming how to set the jumpers to comply with the IDE setting. If your HDD doesn't have this, you should be able to download a manual from their site. here are some common HDD manufacturers;

HP
Hitachi
IBM
Maxtor
Seagate
Wester Digital

• Using your fingernail, gently slide the jumpers off the male pins (if they aren't already in the right place)

• Look at the sticker, and picture where the jumpers will go onto the male pins according with the manufacturers layout. It is imperative that you get this right or the Drive will not install.

Notice here that the jumpers are covering the highlighted section of the male pins, on the sticker? it doesn't matter how they do it, but each male pin must be covered by a jumper, and not any extra pins.

• Slide the Jumpers onto the corresponding pins (as per sticker)

• Push them right down as far as they will go

If you are installing a new drive as Master, and keeping your old drive on as a Slave, repeat the above process, but set the Master's Jumpers to the correct Master Settings.


Plugging In The HDD


Now it's time to screw and plug the HDD back into the case, and connect the IDE Ribbon cable. If you are installing a single Master HDD please read the relevant sections.

• Slide both drives back into their bays (or screw the slave in using an adapter kit). Have the Master HDD on top, and the Slave below it

• Screw the screws into place with the mounting screws, making sure the drives are the right way up, with the exposed underside facing down, and the jumpers section facing outwards

• If you took the drive bay out, screw it back in now

• Now take the Grey IDE Ribbon cable that is/was connected to the Master drive before you removed it (it should still be in the Controller Port attached to the Main Board;

All IDE Ribbon Cables are colour coded, and the HDD one should be light Grey.

• Take the Slave IDE Ribbon Cable Female Connector(2)(Usually the slave channel is light Grey also and push it into the 40 pin slot at the back of the Slave HDD, taking care to make sure it is all the way in, and straight.

Note: There is only one way that the Female Connector will join to the Male 40 Pin Connection.


Notice here that one of the Female Holes is missing, therefore it must correspond with the missing male pin on the HDD.

• Take the spare 4 pin Molex Power Connector, it looks like this;

• Plug it into the 4 Pin Male port at the back of the Slave HDD

• Now take the Master IDE Ribbon Cable Female Connector(1)(Usually Black) and plug it into the Male Connector on the back of the Master HDD

• Plug in the Master HDD's 4 Pin Molex Power Connector

• Make sure all cables are relatively neat, and are not halfway inside the fan cage or anything drastic

• Look back at the pictures you took earlier, is everything as it should be?

• Fix anything that's not right

• Slide the Case back on to the tower and screw it in if need be

• Plug the Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse and Power cord back in

• Boot up the computer

If you have done everything correctly, a screen should come up saying "Checking Disk D:\" and list a whole lot of checks, let it do this. If you do not get this, and when windows loads, the new HDD is not in your My Computer directory, you have done something wrong. Go back and check your connections! If this is not so, and your new drive is in the directory...



Your New HDD or Master/Slave HDD setup is now installed!


Now go install Windows!

Nice guide. A few errors but I am lovin' it. It will probably be stuck.

 

I've got to get it moved to UE. Where are the errors? I wrote it pretty fast. The formatting is fucking up, I had double line spacing and the titles just eat dick.

 

Nicely illustrated guide. Although this is a simple task it can be a little confusing at first.
