So I am soon starting up my new Gaming News/Review site and someone brought up making a profit off of it. This would be, obviously, through advertising. Would it be a smart move to invest in advertising for my site, which in turn would create more web traffic, and then hopefully give me more gateways for other sites advertising.

Smart move? Or should I just wait for people to come by word of mouth (or word of internet chat).

Advertising is important, but you have to remember to find where you will get the most for your money.

I'm currently in the process of launching my own website and think we'd be able to help each other a lot.

Before you look for advertising, I ask what do you have to offer that makes you unique? In recent years(ie. 2007-present) there has been an influx of gaming related websites that are doomed from the beginning because they offer nothing new.

Advertising is always a smart way to go, but you need to know what you have/what you plan to have on your website to help optimize revenue. If you're going big like IGN, then advertising costs money. Of course you receive a return on your investment.

Just some incite from an Advertising major.

    This.

IMO do not invest into this website.
    why?
-You will most definitely lose money
-The reward/time ratio is not favorable
-Creating a website actually takes a LOT of effort and reasonable knowledge in coding.
    -Has been done already.

I agree with everyone in this thread. But if you don't care about revenue and it's something that interests you I say go for it. There is always a chance you'll get lucky and pick up major search engine keywords that could bring quite a bit of organic traffic leading to decent revenue.

Back in 2008 I use to help run a video game news site. It's first two months it grew at a phenomenal rate. I was getting over 5,000 organic uniques a day. Unfortunately we got a little lazy on keeping up with news so after two months we stopped updating. It seemed like traffic was doubling each day with no advertisement. Something like this doesn't always happen it's really based on a little luck and SEO knowledge. We generated a little over $300 in that short time. Though the hours we put in it didn't seem like $300 was worth it :p. Sometimes I wonder how big the site could have grown if we would have kept up on it. If you get lucky and your site grew like mine after a year or so you could easily make $1,000+ a month on autopilot.

Anyways if you're interested I could see if my old partner still has the files and if he does your more then welcome to it all.

You should start off your website without advertising just to make sure you want to keep up with it then after a few months start advertising. Not only will this give you time to see what your viewers want but also give you time to adapt your lifestyle. I would also forget about make money on your website through adverts at the timebeing as you want to make it bigger first surely?

Remember today everything online must be social because that way your website gets more hits from friends of people who visit it. Also it would be better if you can minimise ads in the first year. Lesser the ads, more appealing is the website. That's how FB started. Minimal ads in the start which increased once they had an active user base. Money should be secondary. Content come first, money follows thereafter. Hope this helps

To be completely honest, i don't think it's worth it. You have too much competition and to be successful, your going to need a good PR which has hard to get these days.

www.flippa.com is great if you are looking to flip websites. I would focus on domains. Sometimes you can invest a lot into the website the domain represents and maybe sell it for only $5 more than you bought the DOMAIN for but lose money from the costs of the site. Where as you could have made $5 without "investing".

Smart, because it does not take much money to invest.
It is even smarter if you are good in writin, and if the people like you writing.

    Good luck bro.
