Anyone have a home gym and give there thoughts on this investment?

I've been working out for about 4-5 years on and off (the past year), never had a home gym, only dumbbells, what do you fellas who have your personal home gym make of it?

I'm thinking of making a small personal home gym, got the bench press/barbell, some dumbbells attach-able preacher curl =)

    Throw me some pros/cons :p

Pro: cheaper long term than a gym membership
Pro: don't have to travel far

Con: gets cold in the garage in winter

Not many cons other than upfront cost for it.

I have been thinking of getting my own bench with squat rack.
A few basic plates and what not and with just those, could probably get a pretty good workout.

Do it. I want to too

I just have dumbbells to occasionally do squats, pull backs, raises, and a variation of curls.

I rather go to the gym since the equipment's available to help are diverse and you get to see women in spandex ;)

    Nice!
Never begrudge an investment in yourself!
Personally, I don't think a home gym is something I would ever do. For me, I need to get out of my regular enviornment, too many distractions. I am that way with a lot of things, I always go to a coffee shop to read, etc.

For this reason, I will always have a gym membership. I love seeing people at the gym too!

I have been using my home/outside gym for a few months. Never had so much fun working out before.

    • I work out when I want.
    • I work out how I want.
    • I work out as long as I want.
    • I get a awesome tan while working out, two birds.
    • I don't have to drive to the gym, when I'm pumped and ready I can go straight to the weights.
    • I can blast the music I WANT. So fun to lift while jamming to the music you like.

I've got a adjustable bench for incline/flat/decline. I built a squat rack with a pull up bar above the squat bar. Bench bar, curl bar, dumbell bars, and like 250 lbs in weights.

Con: You have to do purely free weight workouts unless you're loaded or find a good deal for machinery.

Pro to that is I feel like the free weights have given me a lot more muscle control, machinery does a lot of the work for you.

I have a treadmill, pull up bar, elliptical and dumbbells.

Doing pull ups and push ups are essential for increasing your strength and I would strongly recommend never getting a treadmills for home gym, it's boring and you would rather be outside instead of running in one spot.

Go for it man! Personally I really only need them for skullcrushers, which is quite honestly the king of tricep isolation exercises. Ez bar curls are pretty decent as well, although I do prefer using dumbbells for biceps.
