$1Million or a penny doubled every day?

i heard this story with something about a chessboard and grains of rice...
something about a king was beaten at a game of chess by some guy and the king offered him anything he wanted. And that guy asked for 1 grain of rice on the first square and 2 on the second and 4 on the third, 8 on the fourth etc.

Saw this question in the movie "The Happening" I was going to pick the million at first

 

Heard this a few times.. so I would have choose the penny.

I would double my penny everyday. I have the patience for my balance to grow so when time goes by, eventually I will go over 1million dollars and get more than what I would've got if I just took the 1million on the spot.

 

I heard about this when I was about 4 watching some kids tv show, I choose the million and then learned about it. Since then I fell in love with math.

 

Hah, I love all of the comments about being patient and whatnot. It's only over a months time, and you get 5mil.. >_< I'd be 100% happy with either of these choices, but of course if you had the choice, I don't see why someone would choose the $1 million. ;p

 

I chose the 1 million but I didn't know what you meant I thought u meant every day of your life you get 2 pennies.

 

Hah, yeah I chose the million the first time I was told this, because I thought it would only come out to 60 pennies ;p Gotta think about things before you jump to conclusions.

 

well you have to think, who on the world would actually accept $1 billion dollars of pennies when buying a company.. lol

Okay, let me just clear this up. I said you would get around $5 million after the penny being doubled, not 5 million pennies, so for everyone that's all like, 'I'd take the million because no one accepts that many pennies!', thanks for the laugh ^_^ And.. this is probably never going to happen to anyone.
