My future. Need help.

Hey so let me start off by saying this. I live in Canada and here we have the choice to take academic or applied math , if you take academic you go to uni if you take applied you to go college so obviously i have been taking academic so far and i am just about to finish grade 10, and im wondering do i have to take grade 12 math to graduate and go off to university or ust grade 11 math? and here comes the help part ,

The first half of me wants to go to university and get a good paying job and live well you know just go to university and come out get a nice, high paying job, something involving computers or something like law.

The other part of me REALLY REALLY wants to become a police officer i don't know why but i have always wanted to bcome one and i am just wondering these questions.

1) is it a good paying job? including benefits and everything.
2) is it a proud job? By this i mean say i go to a high school reunion and everyone is bragging how they are docters and such and i tell them i am a police officer is it a job to be emberessed about or is it a respected job.?

3) Is there anything other then a cop i can become after like fbi kinda stuff i live in canada so we probably have something different but im really interested in this kind of work.

What should i do? Go off to university and work my butt off getting a high payed job i wont enjoy that much i mean ill still deal with it or become a cop which i will love i cant imagine something better then waking up every morning and putting on the uniform and serving my duty.

Another thing if i were to go off to university and Become a cop afterwards would all those years of uni go to waste? say i studied law or somthing because im not sure if i need uni to become a cop? or would the person giving me the job give it to me over others because i went to uni and got the higher education.

Im just not sure about all this stuff any input would be great , im just really confused about my situation right now, :s , i think about this alot just completely lost so many questions and stuff. Anything would be great guys really, i've never posted in this section so please don't be harsh or anything im just really looking for advice and help here.

Im not really comfortable asking for advice like this, i havn't really talked to anyone about this including friends anything. But i guess here i can ask openly

 

Hey mate, I will give you my humble & honest opinion about this

I personally think that you should choose what you like the most, I am sure that you deeply know whats the right choice. You know they say that when someone chooses a carreer they really like, then they will eventually be good at it because they will put passion on doing it.

Plus I am aware that in North america being a cop gets well paid (I couldnt confirm you this, but thats what I heard).

I personally think that being a cop is definetely a proud job. I would be very proud if I had a family member that was a cop

hey i searched up the pay and stuff they said they make like $50k the first year and in 4 years i will be making up towards like 90k or something is that a good salary? because im still young i don't know this stuff is it enough to live a good life?

 

Thats wonderfull news mate! 50k is a lot already. I am 19 years old and I personanly think its enough for a good living. (I would talk to an adult about this though, just to make it sure ^_^ )

The thing is that I would suggest to keep searching as it can 50k but you can get to work like 10 hours per day or sometimes even more hours

 

First off, never choose a job based on bragging rights or what someone else wants. If you wont enjoy it, don't do it. You could have to work this job, potentially, for the next 40 years.

The police is a well paying job, yes, but there are lots of different job titles in the police department. There's the general police officer/community officer, the K9 unit (drugs/specialist dogs or just general dogs), traffic police.. etc. If you want to go down the criminology and psychology side (rather than police studies and law) there's also behaviour analyst units (like you see in Criminal Minds ) and things like that.

Personally I went to college and took a course that had several different subjects in it and studied psychology, sociology, politics, history, research methodology, communication and an introduction to criminology. Then after the first year I studied the ones I liked the most in more detail.

Just do what you enjoy!

 

I think in the end it's up to you no matter what people say. You could always move to America and find a more you-based career if you can't settle for something in Canada. I'm not saying that Canada isn't the place to be but you may always find something you like more elsewhere and it's always worth the extra research to find out. Regarding the fact if it's something to be proud of.. you should be proud of anything that you find to be an accomplishment. A police officer is known to fight evil, that's the tag that comes along with it, so yeah, in my opinion it's everything to be proud of. I don't know much about the law enforcement anywhere but I'm sure it has its ups and downs regarding benefits and such.

A further education is never a waste if you can afford it and it won't send you down the hole of debt for the rest of your life to where you'll be uncomfortable with the way that you live. I'd say go where you please, just do some research first on the careers that you're most interested in and leave your mind open for a broad search.

 

doesn't your school have a guy who can tell you all this kind of stuff? at my school here in western canada i can ask this one guy who is like a counselor kind of thing about what courses i need to take to get into just about any job out there. they'd definitely be a lot more helpful than anyone here

 

Guys THANK YOU SO MUCH. i was banned for a while on sythe and i honestly read over all your replies and wanted to reply so badly thank you guys. I thought everything over and im going to persue the career in law enforcement ITs a job i would be happy to wake up in the morning and actually do.
