Though you hope it will never happen to you, the fact is at some point during your life you’ll most likely have to have surgery on one thing or another. Of course, there is always fear and anxiety attendant with any medical procedure, but you would hope that with a highly trained and paid surgeon, you should be in good hands.

Medical “never evers”

Not so, according to a new study recently released by Johns Hopkins University researchers in the medical journal Surgery. Actually, they found that “never ever” events occurred “about 80,000 times in hospitals in the United States from 1990 and 2010.” Medical “never evers: are preventable events that cause harm to a patient during surgery.

The following are some of the most sobering statistics on the “never evers” shared in the study:
· 39 times per week, a “foreign body” (such as a sponge) was left inside a patient
· 20 times per week, the wrong surgery was performed
· 20 times per week, the wrong part of the body was operated on

High numbers of medical malpractice claims settled

These staggering numbers led to the settling of more than 9.700 medical malpractice claims in the 10 year period studied. The point of these statistics is not to scare you away from ever having a surgery again, rather, it is to educate you on the risks of surgery and to remind you that even surgeons are human.
