Can anyone explain to me why Derrick Rose was the 2011 MVP?
I can't help thinking there were quite a number of people that deserved it more

MVP is awarded to the player who is number one (Of a list of 5) the most often on the list of esteemed sportswriters and broadcasters in North America who think the player is most valuable to his team. Of course every one has conflicting opinions on who should be MVP every year, you can use stats or personal analysis to support your reason on why this person should win the award over this person.

You also got to remember the Bulls were a .500 team the year before and Noah as well Boozer were both injuried for long time periods during the regular season. The Bulls had a solid defensive system, but Rose blew games open with his dominance and gave the bulls a Ridiclous 62-20 record. That's an entire .256 % winning increase. If you took Rose away you will probably have a team that's .500 or even below, even if Noah and Boozer weren't injuried and Rose was. So judging on how much an impact Rose was on the 62-20 season from the Bulls, the award was rightfully his. The MVP award isn't the best player but the most valuable player.

He really has revolutionized the PG position. Definitely the most athletic PG in the league and maybe of all time. Pacers coach Frank Vogel described him after their round 1 playoff lost to him as "[Derrick] has Allen Iverson's speed, Jason Kidd's vision, Chauncy Billups shooting and Michael Jordan's athleticism. How do you stop that? We did our job on him, but he's too much." Add his Isiah Thomas like ball handling skills and you have one crazy concoction.

In his rookie and sophomore years he was only emerging as a star and would occasionally be talked and debated on. In the 2010-11 season, there was no doubt of his star prowess, and the stats prove it.

    2008-09
    16.8 PPG, 6.3 APG, 3.9 RPG

    2009-10
    20.8 PPG, 6.0 APG, 3.7 RPG

    2010-11
    24.9 PPG, 7.9 APG, 4.1 RPG

Since he was drafted as the #1 pick, he turned the Bulls from a .400 (33-49) team to a league leading .756 (62-20) in just 3 seasons. A PG being the glue of the team is a rare feat in itself, to go on and win MVP as a PG even rarer. Rose has turned the Bulls from an untalked about team living in the shadow of Jordan's era in to a true title contender and praise coming from all sources. It took Jordan 7 seasons to get the Bulls to a +60 winning team but Rose only 3. With his clutch shooting and possession of so many adorned basketball skills he really does have that control. He broke through in the 2010-11 season leaving no doubts in the skeptics to prove he has it.

And if this hasn't convinced you enough, watch this video...

Yes, I can see your point Platypi. I thought it was given to the best player until I read what you said. However, I still think there are a couple of guys that should've been MVP over Rose.

    First, LeBron James.

It may sound repetitive, but he should've been the first option for the award.

    38.8 MPG, 26.7 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 7.0 APG, 51.0 FG%, 33.0 3PT%

LeBron surpassed Rose in every one of those categories but APG and 3PT%. He had a great season in Miami, as well.

He may have had Chris Bosh and D-Wade there to help him, but something outside of that team showed the real value of James. It's amazing how Cleveland, who used to have the best record in the 2009-2010 season, turned into one of the bottom teams in the NBA, after losing him.

    There's also Dwight Howard.

    37.5 MPG, 22.9 PPG, 14.1 RPG, 59.3 FG%, 2.4 BPG, 1.4 SPG

Numbers and the 2011 Defensive Player of the Year award aside, Dwight Howard did pretty much everything for Orlando. You just have to see Orlando's 2nd main scorer in that season (Jason Richardson, 13.9 PPG), and the second main rebounder (Brandon Bass, 5.6 RPG). While Derrick Rose had a Carlos Boozer in the team (he still managed to play 59 games) who averaged 17.5 PPG and over 9 RPG, Dwight Howard had no one to count on.

And last, but not least, Kevin Durant.

    38.9 MPG, 27.7 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 2.7 APG, 1.1 SPG, 1.0 BPG, 46.2 FG%, 35.0 3PT%

He has won back-to-back scoring titles in just 4 years, and he's a great clutch shooter, as you could notice in their first encounter with Dallas this season. You might as well consider the fact that from his rookie season (where the sonics lost Rashard Lewis and Ray Allen), his team went from 20-62 to 55-27 in the 2010-2011 season. Sure, he had the help of Russell Westbrook and 2011's Coach of the year Scott Brooks. However, OKC started rising the moment they drafted Durant.

Now, other possible MVPs aside, JohnK, you have to acknowledge the fact that the 62-20 record wasn't Rose's feat alone. The season before they had a .500 record, so you have got to give credit to the 2010-2011 additions to the Bulls, Tom Thibodeau and Carlos Boozer. There was also a Luol Deng giving some support with 17 PPG and 5 RPG.

Lebron shoulda had it, almost all his stats where higher then rose, not sure what all the hype was about, hes a great player, but on paper there's tons of players who did better then him, if Lebron doesnt get mvp this year after avereging 29 pts in the first couple game of the season then im done watching NBA

Russell Westbrook (who most consider a top 10-15 player in the league) 2011 Stats:

    PPG: 22.2 (Rose 25)
    RPG: 4.7 (Rose 4.1)
    APG: 7.9 (Rose 7.7)
    SPG: 1.8 (Rose 1.1)
    BPG: 0.4 9 (Rose 0.6)

    FG%: .432 (Rose .445)
    3Pt FG%: .316 (Rose .333)
    FT%: .843 (Rose .858)

Now, as you can see, taken wholistically, Rose's stats are probably better; however, not by a huge margin. Also take into account that this is just against Russell Westbrook, a top 5(ish) PG and top 10(ish) player.

I believe Rose won because of his hype. Big city team, big supporters (Michael Wilbon, ect), great record.

I believe Derrick Rose deserved it that year he had for the bulls leading them to the best record of the east and leading them to the NBA Eastern Conference Finals.
