Curiosity and Mars

Who's excited for this tonight. I'm rather curious to see mars in kinda real time. That is if everything goes ok.

Basically there will be a live video of it landing on Mars tonight and I think some footage.

 

Fantastic! thanks for the link, i watched a couple videos lately to do with Curiosity and how they plan everything to work and the mechanics behind it, its mind-blowing how their gonna pull it off.

I'm quite interested in this stuff because this is history in the making. That is as long as the landing goes as planned.

 

Its gonna be incredibly hard to pull it off given the procedures it faces as displayed in the video but for all the billions they've put into perfecting it, i reckon they will, might be some minor bumps but none the less i reckon they'll land it just about.

The part that interests me the most is what we will see as its coming live. I mean will we see it as it lands? Maybe they will then let us see mars from the feed. Wonder what the feed will look like.

 

Im not sure but i hope so, but I'm not getting my hopes up. Considering during its descent into mars it'll be going like 1000mph and i don't know much about how good these cameras are gonna be but to operate under 9 G's and insane heat of traveling so fast i would imagine the cameras couldn't handle it surely.

Perhaps the feed will begin when curiosity slows down to 200mph after the parachute phase as that sounds more plausible conditions for them not to melt lol

 

Was this the rover was launched to land on the moon about 6-7 years ago or somewut? I remember in 4th grade or 5th grade that they launched one set for mars..

 

They launched it like last November....

Approximately 4:30am for us unfortunately!

 

I have been waiting for this day since it launched. Some of you may know I work for NASA (TBE), I can answer a lot of questions about this if anyone has them. PM me though because I do not want to take over OP's thread =p.

HUGE mixture of excitement and nervousness, far more than a shuttle launch. I can say that if this fails, JPL will take some horrible media for the next few weeks and what will not be shown is how advanced and insane this landing is. Yeah they can talk about it but not passed the point of "It is extremely difficult". If there is success, there will be 2 days of media coverage and its gone. It might be my biased opinion but this needs to be celebrated nationally.

Luckily I will be watching the landing on an imax screen here in Huntsville with some co-workers. I suggest you guys look at the map below and get to a landing party near you!

Well I will be watching tonight and if it is a fail then it's going to be tragic. I hope we get some good stuff tonight. I didn't know until I saw its being shown on Xbox live tonight also.

Yeah thats how i saw it to, after i saw this post i logged onto Xbox and saw the advertisement, took the quiz and I'm playing the game atm lol

 

Well here's my issue, I think it's at midnight here. But I work at 730am I wonder how long the video will go for?

 

Ahh, I've been wondering that myself... If I'm gonna get up at 4:30am to watch it, i don't want to be awake for more than 1 hour as ill wanna go back to bed.

I can't imagine it being that long though, maybe 30-60 minutes?
