I didn't deem this discussion as SFA worthy, as it's a rather basic subject.

What are your views on texting?

In the past few weeks, i've had a boom in the amount of texts I send out and it has got me thinking about text structure, wording and length.
My personal opinion is that texts can come across as quite cold, and sometimes negative, replacing real emotion with smilies, kisses and other things. For some people, the length it takes the other person to reply can be frustrating, if longer than expected. Short, blunt texts such as 'Ok. x' can also be frustrating for the other person or as I like to call it, are a 'Conversation Killer', where you leave the other person, lets say the 'text-ee' conversationless and in the dark. I just read a thread on the forum, where another user is finding it hard to deal with such things. Do you find contributionless messages frustrating? There is also the subject of 'How many kisses are on the end of a text'. How much is enough? If you're texting your other half, what is the acceptable amount? Would you send 4/5 x's to someone that is just a friend?

I much prefer phone calls, as the amount of time to have a conversation is reduced significantly, and you get more of a personal touch from a persons voice, the kind that can never be replaced by text on a screen. It's made me come to realise the human voice is a wonderful thing.

I agree with you, I love texting and all, but I'd much rather prefer talking on the phone, a lot more personal and saves a lot of time.
But I also like texting so I can cake with females when I can't talk to them. Balances out imo. :)

I text my girlfriend all day. It's a lot easier to keep conversations going over text than over the phone, and who wants to sit with a phone to their ear all day long, and who has the time?

Sure 10 minute responses can be annoying when she's busy but whatever.

I've always HATED talking to people on the phone, because you can never see their face. It just feels so awkward to me.

My phone carrier is fucking no-contract. You know what that means? The iPhone costs like $650 with them. No thanks, I'm not going to dish out that much money for an overpriced locked down piece of shit from a greedy company when you're just paying for the name "Apple".

    I run Android all day.

Anyways, to avoid starting a massive fight, I prefer just Skyping her. Fuck yo FaceTime! lol.

I understand, to enjoy the real perks and benefits of the 4S it's best to have it on a provider its supposed to be with, like for an example I'm on a the 4S now with Sprint, fuck payIng overpriced for it and then having to unlock it and jailbreak it and shit for a shitty ass provider like T-Mobile or BoostMobile etc.
You pay for what you get imo, Androids are sick too though.

Hah. I'm on the Sprint network. I'm with Virgin Mobile though.

I got with them back in the old days when it was $25 for unlimited text, data, web. 300 minutes of talk which I don't use. I'm grandfathered on their old plan so I can get any phone for $25 a month.

I'm running a midline Android right now, I'd definitely never go back to iOS. Even a jailbroken phone is 5x more locked down than a regular Android. Apple and their proprietary shit.

I think Skype is brilliant. Free computer to computer video calls, though I used to do something similar on MSN Messenger many moons ago. I've not tried out Facebook's video chat feature yet though.

What's the android Skype app like?

I myself have an Android phone running Gingerbread, and I love it.
What I really love about it is the text window, and the ability to read the old texts while replying as i'm really forgetful. While it's old-hat for most people, for me it's relatively new as i've never owned a smartphone before (the last phone of mine was techically a smart phone but ran an ancient version of Windows Phone which sucked).

Skype on Android is pretty good, I don't use it very often because my phone doesn't have a front facing camera, but I've heard that if it does you can use it as a webcam.

Yeah I think texts can be quite impersonal as they are merely words, they can be mis-interpreted. I think calls are better but in Nz cellphone calling is an outrageous price per minute.

    I hate texting.

It is super convenient for a quick chat..but I swear some people just ignore messages on purpose...which is beyond aggravating. And it's not because they don't like you..it's usually because they're that lazy.

I've gotten in trouble texting in the past..because people think my responses are cold or cynical when they were supposed to be supportive. You can't really read someones seriousness or sarcasm and that ambiguity can lead to big problems or unwanted fights/arguments.

Honestly the thing that did it for me (that made me hate texting) was the whole being ignored thing. I have friends that will "disappear" for weeks at a time..ignoring any and all texts. It is beyond aggravating. Why do you pay all that money for a phone and the ability to text just to ignore someone or take days at a time to reply. I understand people are busy but there's literally nobody to busy to type out a 30 second text. If people go long enough without texting I'll start to worry and wonder if they're okay.

I'm probably just going to nuke my phone, I really would probably be better off without it. I'm the type of person that takes being ignored personally. It's just my personality..I know they're probably not doing it on purpose...well some of them probably are. I've already destroyed my facebook and twitter..it is just so much more peaceful without that added drama.

I love texting and all but sometimes i just like the hear the person voice and talk to them instead of them taking 10-15 minutes to reply to a text or something. But as people said i don't like talking on the phone much but i only call someone when i have something important or long to say that just can't wait. I only text people if its like to ask them to hang out or ask them a small question.

I totally agree with you, one can never really truly convey how they feel towards someone via a text message, it is incredibly hard sometimes to distinguish how a person is saying something and often something perfectly reasonable can be misconstrued due to this.

However on the other hand I like how easy and quick texting can be, it's a lot easier in lots of situations for myself to communicate with people when I couldn't phone them for example in work or in a university lecture. I guess they both have their positives and negatives, but I certainly text now more than I phone for sure.

I dread talking on the phone.
I love texting! If I don't want to sound rude I usually put "haha" or "lol" at the end of it. If I'm talking to a girl and I want to give her a compliment I usually end it with a ";)" or something of that nature. Not always though.

I usually text the same people though so I don't really get the "ignoring" thing yet.

P.S I need to get the new Iphone 4S for Facetime or just wait until the 5 comes out. 2 Year contract almost over mothafuckasssssssss

I like talking on the phone much more than texting. Unfortunately, the current generation prefers texting over talking, so I'm stuck texting...

Texting... where to start? It's going to be a wall of... text.

On a preliminary level, I must say I really struggle to be in the presence of those that incessantly text. If someone is in your company and yet feels the need to have their phone in hand, texting others perpetually, I always wonder just what message (if you will excuse the pun...) they are trying to send.

As for texting in general, I tend to prefer to phone someone or converse online. I rarely send text messages unless responding to a text message I have received; I am unlikely to initiate a conversation via text, unless, for example, I am asking someone if they want to go for lunch.
