Alot of you may know Wikipedia is offline for today for reasons I personally can't explain.

But for you guys that need/want to use Wikipedia today, if you load up the page you want to view,

    for example; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Runescape

You will see the page load up then load the blackout page.

Well if you click the stop button on your browser before the blackout page shows, you should be able to view all information on the page.

Just a heads up for anyone who may of not realised.

    Thanks :)

Why should SOPA take down wikipedia?
    This is stupid.

I know nothing of SOPA and how US bills work, I live in the UK and haven't really seen much about this on the news. Happy for someone to explain in detail :)

From my understanding sopa will enable the united states government to censor potentially copyrighted information. As we all know YouTube contains copyrighted music in videos or even copyrighted videos as a whole. To fight the piracy, the us could if they want, completely block YouTube until the copyrighted information is removed. Not only does this effect America but YouTube is a world wide site that if shut down for a period of time, would effect other countries. I do not believe this is probable but it is possible and that is the scary part. I did read about dns blocking being removed but icam not sure completely. http://gizmodo.com/5877000/what-is-sopa

Basically it's that if you do something that's copyrighted in the US on the internet, you can be charged as a felon.

SOPA didn't take down Wikipedia.. Wikipedia opted to blackout for a day, to draw attention to SOPA and PIPA.

Nice to see it down in protest. Now to wait for Reddit to do the same.

You can also use it on a mobile device, it only displays a banner at the top of the screen, but personally I've been resisting the temptation to cheat around it, considering it's for a very good cause.

It's basically a fight against plagiarism and piracy is apparently all it is,
And if you go on Craigslist as well, they have a banner stating to going against the SOPA bill.

You can indeed, but I found just searching on google itself followed by wiki is probably easier then me finding the cache version earlier, thanks :)

I posted this thread, and I am posting now on my iPad 2. I still, was blocked from using Wikipedia and had to use the method I explained above to get around it. Maybe by mobile they mean just phones and not tablets?

No problem mate, anything to help haha!

you can indeed, but you can say bye bye to your Skype, Runescape, WoW or whatever else your running in the background? :)

Cool never knew that, thought if it counted my iPad as a mobile device it would re-direct me to the mobile site, as it does with twitter and the rest of that junk.

There's another way around it, times running out anyway I'm guessing, it's 2AM here in England.
