How to: Mount ISOs and .img (etc.)

Please note: This tutorial is for educational purposes only. Any breaches of copyright etc. are not my problem.

Right, so an ISO is a file that is saved in .img format (or sometimes .bin). Many torrents, pirated games etc. are saved in the ISO (.iso) format, and therefore require a special software to 'mount' the ISO.

    Requirements:

An ISO-mounting software - I recommend 'Virtual CloneDrive' from Slysoft. This is because its more compatible with Windows in most versions, and I find the GUI to be easier to read, and more pleasing to the eye. Also, as far as I'm aware, most others don't have an Auto-mount feature. This may not be the case, but, I still find CloneDrive just an easier option. Also, unlike DaemonTools - it already works. Users of Vista have to download a patch a patch for DaemonTools to work, and - as I pointed out earlier, this makes it more reliable, and means it's more compatible.

A file to mount. If you have downloaded this from the internet, it will probably be in a .img file, and saved with a couple of other files. Just look for the one which takes up a lot of memory. In my case, the file I mounted was 520,000KB.

    Installing the ISO mounter

    Step 1.

Open the setup, and agree to the terms and conditions. A screen will come up, asking what files you want VirtualCloneDrive to associate with. Select all of them.

    Step 2.

Save it in your desired folder (I generally save mine in the C: drive).

    Step 3.

Install it. Sometimes, when it says 'Installing Driver... Please wait' a box will appear in the background. It will not appear on the toolbar. This is fine, just click 'Continue Anyway'. You shouldn't have any more problems.

    Mounting the ISO

    Step 1.

Find where it's saved and double click it - this will automatically mount it however this does not always work. If that is the case, then follow the next steps. If not, then your program should run!

Step 2. (For the not-so lucky ones)

Right-click on the Virtual CloneDrive icon in the toolbar, and select 'Drive E:' then 'Mount'. Manually find the .iso or .img and then it will play! If not, your file sucks.

Nice simple guide. I use MagicDisk to mount .iso's or run disk's I've copied to my pc. Up to 12 at a time if I wanted.

Nice, and thanks man :) I love Clone Drive because I find the auto-mounting part so cool to do - I'm not familiar with many others, although I hear DaemonTools is good.

    Thanks for the feedback ^^

I never preferred DeamonTools because when I first learned about mounting .iso's, it was really confusing for me. So I never went back.

Maybe point out some of the benefits of using Clone Drive as opposed to others. OR, include some information about other mounting programs in your guide.

    Just a suggestion.
