    Character Creation
Creating a character is always crucial to gameplay, as it includes the time you spend playing, the way you level, or the effects in end-game content. Whether it being the class or race, a good combination goes a long way. There are 3 roles one must decide on when doing this as well: To become a tank, a healer, or deal damage.

Before playing, there are a few things to choose.
    • Realm
    • Race
    • Class
    Realm
Choosing a realm can be quite difficult at times, but should be decided by the server population, the realm type, or whether you have a friend that you would like to play with. For the server population, it's best to choose a server with a medium to high amount of members. Choosing a fresh server will make the gameplay boring, and a full server can result in high amounts of lag and a wait time when trying to log in. There are four different realm types: Normal (PvE), PvP, Role Playing, and Role Playing PvP. Deciding on this will ultimately come down to your personal preference of gameplay. Finally, having a friend to play with on the game can lead to different in-game benefits, along with the fact they'll always be there to help.

Upon choosing your realm, you will enter a screen where you will be able to create your first character. In doing so, you will have the option to choose your race, class, name, and customize the looks of your newest creation.

    Race
In WoW, each race has it's own passive abilities, which may give benefits deciding on which class combination you wish to make, and/or if you plan on leveling certain professions. Before choosing your race, you will have to decide upon which faction you wish to be a part of first as well: Alliance or Horde, who battle one another day and night in Azeroth in search for glory, and honor.

Listed below are the two factions and their associated races.
    Alliance
    • Human
    • Night Elf
    • Dwarf
    • Gnome
    • Draenei
    Horde
    • Orc
    • Troll
    • Tauren
    • Undead
    • Blood Elf
    Class
After choosing your race, it's time to choose which class you wish to be. Some class combinations require certain races in order to play. For example, you can't make a Draenei Rogue, as the Draenei do not believe in damage. One should always base this decision on whether they enjoy being one who heals, deals damage, or tanks. In some classes, this may be interchangeable.

Listed below are the available classes, useable by both factions, and their possible roles.
    • Mage (Damage)
    • Rogue (Damage)
    • Hunter (Damage)
    • Warlock (Damage)
    • Priest (Damage, Healer)
    • Warrior (Tank, Damage)
    • Shaman (Damage, Healer)
    • Druid (Tank, Damage, Healer)
    • Paladin (Tank, Damage, Healer)
    • Death Knight (available at first character to level 55) (Tank, Damage)
    Recruit-a-friend
Recruit-a-friend is a program added by Blizzard to give benefits to players for, well, recruiting friends. In addition, recruiting comes with many perks for both players. This includes 3x the experience gain, grant-able levels, friend-to-friend summoning, an X-53 Touring Rocket flying mount and 30 days of subscription time for the person performing the recruitment.

Along with recruiting, there is also a scroll of resurrection one may cast on a friend who has been inactive for more than 90 days. This will send them a free 10-day trial by email, and if that friend adds at least one month of game time, the sender will also be rewarded with a free month.

Since the services are available to everyone, why not take advantage of it? Below is a sticky on Sythe for Blizzard's Recruit-a-friend program.

    Hotkeys, Interface, and Macros

    Hotkeys
Hotkeys are controls on your keyboard that can be used for convenience, such as opening your friend list or sitting down.

Below is a list of useful pre-set hotkeys and a description of what they do.
    • W - Move forward
    • S - Move backward
    • A - Turn left
    • D - Turn right
    • Q - Strafe left
    • E - Strafe right
    • R - Reply to Chat
    • T - Attack Target
    • F - Assist Target
    • H - PvP Pane
    • J - Guild Pane
    • O - Social Pane
    • C - Character Pane
    • U - Reputation Pane
    • I - Dungeon Finder
    • P - Spellbook
    • L - Quest Log
    • Y - Achievements
    • Z - Sheath/Unsheath Weapon
    • X - Sit/Move Down
    • V - Show Enemy Name Plates
    • B - Open bags
    • N - Talents
    • M - World Map

All of these and more can be found by pulling up the key binds; press escape to pull up the options and click key binds. Here, you may also assign your own key binds for quick use of spells, mounting, or other abilities.

    Interface
By pressing escape to bring up the options, you'll also find the interface. Here, you'll be able to customize your UI (user interface) in many ways. This includes additional action bars, customization of raid and arena frames, buffs and debuffs changes, and much more. Tweaking of these can help some people greatly, such as the new raid frames introduced, as healers no longer need to use an addon to assist them. Also, making these changes along with some available custom user interface addons on the web can make your UI unique, helping you in ways to beat the rest. :)

    Macros
Macros are great to make sometimes, and serve a great purpose in the game for some. Naturally, people will enable actions bars, create macros for spells to place in the action bars, and add a key bind to it for quick use. This can amount to requiring a lot of effort for some classes, but can only ensure that some of your classes most useful spells won't be ignored, and serve a purpose in end-game content.

Below are two in-depth looks at macros as presented on the World of Warcraft Official Website.

    Macros - The Basics
    Macros - Macro Guide I

    Character Leveling
Now that you've created your character, it's time to level. This can be simple for some depending on if they can heal themselves or not, but difficult for others if they can only deal damage. As a result, making a friend early in the game can be helpful, as you'll be able to group up and complete things together. This may have it's advantages and disadvantages, but will be beneficial in the long run. Due to many changes in the game, there are many different ways to level, which includes:
    • Questing
    • Battlegrounds
    • Dungeon Finder
    Questing
Questing is relatively useful in early levels, as it provides players with starting gear, money, and a simple introduction to the game. When one is beginning their adventure, most quests can be done solo, but some prefer to be in groups for faster gathering of required items and completion. However, when you're nearby one another in a group, the experience gain for killing monsters is reduced. The quest log can be accessed by pressing 'L' on your keyboard, and the quests are colored to represent difficulty.
    • Grey - The quest is a low level quest, and will not provide many benefits.
    • Green - The quest is most likely solo-able, and will provide fair benefits.
    • Yellow - The quest may require some help, and will provide good benefits.
    • Red - The quest is difficult and should be completed in a group; provides great benefits.
The majority of quests while leveling will be colored in either green or yellow, assuming you're exploring new areas as you level. There are addons that will guide you where you need to go at certain levels, and are, in my opinion, very important to progressing in the game.

If you're uncertain as to where to level, take a look at this map, which shows the best zone to level in for certain levels.
    http://media.mmo-champion.com/images/news/2010/november/levelflow.jpg

There are thousands of different addons on the internet that serve their own purpose. For leveling, cartographer and quest helper are two important addons that will help out. Cartographer will reveal areas of the map, so that you can see unexplored areas on the World Map (press 'M' on keyboard). Also, this addon will direct you toward areas you may want to level in, as it shows which zones are proper for certain levels. For quest helper, its name speaks for itself. While you're leveling, it will conveniently guide you in an ordered direction to ensure your time is well spent while questing.

These addons and much more can be found by downloading and using Curse Client, found here:

    Battlegrounds
With the introduction of Patch 3.2, battlegrounds saw some much needed updates. Not only are there now separate brackets for twinks and non-twinks, but one can gain experience from participating in these battlegrounds. The first battleground is available at level 10, Warsong Gulch. At higher levels, more battlegrounds will be available, which will be discussed later in this guide. It is said that due to the size and milestones in the battleground, Alterac Valley seems to be one awarding the most amount of experience. Call to Arms, available on the weekend, is also good for experience gain.

    Dungeon Finder
Available at level 15, one will be able to use the new Dungeon Finder to put instance groups together. If you have friends on the server, it's easier to find a group by joining the queue as a group; meaning the more people you have in the group, the more likely it will be to get into an instance quick. One can use the Dungeon Finder to level all the way up to 80 once available, and is a good way to also keep your gear up to date if you win the roll(s). Also, if you chose to be a Tank as your role, you'll nearly have an instance queue, making it much more convenient to level as you can do chain instances.

While doing dungeons, you'll have to keep watch on your talents as well. Here's a thread made by Stuart for some of the best specs.
    http://www.sythe.org/showthread.php?t=958880

There are many benefits from using this system, including the most important, learning your class. Try it out, but be sure to have fun. :)

    Battlegrounds
Battlegrounds are instance based areas allowing player versus player (or PvP) combat. Fights occur between the Alliance and the Horde in these battlegrounds, earning Honor Points for each kill recorded. There are 6 battlegrounds in total, and can be queue'd for from anywhere in the world of Azeroth by using your honor pane (H), added in patch 3.1.0. In doing so, you'll be matched with various Alliance and Horde from multiple servers, who unite using tactics and teamwork in a chance for glory. Using the honor pane to queue, you'll notice that you'll be able to choose different battlegrounds (based on your level), or be adventurous and choose to join a random one. You'll earn extra honor for joining a random battleground, but some take advantage of the weekend as well, joining the Call to Arms battleground. Some players find battlegrounds a good way to level as well, and provide multiple benefits for players of any level. Try not to be away for too long one you join, however, as you may be kicked and unable to join another battleground for 30 minutes. This is a good addition to help prevent leechers from joining games, so try and report players if they don't leave your base or log off from the game.

    Warsong Gulch
Available to players at level 10, Warsong Gulch is more or less a game of capture the flag, with a team winning by capturing 3 flags, or the team with the most captures as time runs out. Each team will start off in their respective keep, where the flag may be defended by players, but is not commonly done when the game begins. If you pick up the flag, you'll be unable to mount (levels 20+), which makes this game more interesting for those in the 10-19 level bracket. Also, if both teams have control of their opponents flag, one cannot capture the flag until the other team has lost control of theirs. Warsong Gulch is one of the most basic games in PvP, but requires strong team co-ordination in order to win.

    Arathi Basin
Arathi Basin is available players at level 20 and above, and is similar to a game of King of the Hill. In this battleground, there are 5 bases forming a cross on the map that must be captured by both teams. This makes the game very exciting and much more complicated to win. To win the game, one team must gain 1600 resources, gathered by controlling each base. If your team works together to capture and defend the bases, and have control of all 5 at once, you'll get an advantage, gathering 30 resources per tick per second. As a result, if you're losing in a game, never give up, as there's always a chance to come back and win with great co-ordination.

    Alterac Valley
Alterac Valley is available to players at level 51, and one of the most difficult battlegrounds in my opinion. This battleground requires much teamwork, and has multiple objectives to be completed throughout the game. To go along with this, each team is comprised of 40 players, making it nearly impossible to do anything solo. The objective for this battleground is to reduce the enemies reinforcements from 600 to 0, which can be accomplished in many ways. Killing of the enemy captain, destruction of bunkers or towers, or killing of enemy players are ways to do this. If a team kills the other teams general, the game will be ended instantly, but requires at least some towers/bunkers to be destroyed first, as the generals gain a buff from each one. There are many different strategies to win, but isn't uncommon if one team attempts to "zerg", destroying both of your bases bunkers and then killing the general.

    Eye of the Storm
Available at level 61, Eye of the Storm is much like Capture the Flag as well, but with a twist. Within this battleground are 4 towers, which grant points to the team in control of each one. In the middle of the map, there is a flag, which resets upon capture. If your team is in control of more towers, you'll gain more points for capturing the flag (75/85/100/500). The objective in Eye of the Storm is to be the first team to earn 1600 points, which can be achieved by multiple strategies and good teamwork.

    Strand of the Ancients
Strand of the Ancients is available to players at level 71, which reminds me of Normandy as the game starts from the offensive side. Yes, this battleground is the first that includes two rounds: one for offence and one for defence. On the offensive side, the goal is to take down as many walls as possible, progressing and capturing and relic beyond the last wall. There will be siege engines to assist in taking down these walls when the game begins, and seaforium charges around the map that will help as well. With a good push from the team on one side, the relic can at times be captured in under 4 minutes, which grants an achievement. After the first round has ended, the team that defended will have as much time to capture the relic that the other team set. For defending, there are turrets near the walls that do a fair amount of damage to both the siege engines and players, and should be taken advantage of when in range for use. If neither team is able to capture the relic in the pre-set 10 minutes, then the game will be considered a tie, which very rarely occurs.

    Isle of Conquest
Isle of Conquest, also available at level 71, is a battleground also made of 40 players per faction. This battleground is, to me, such like a mixture of Alterac Valley, Arathi Basin, and Strand of the Ancients. There are 5 capturable locations, with a game ending by either draining the other teams reinforcements, or killing the opposing teams general. With the 5 capturable locations comes benefits for the team, as some control of one location may support the control of another location. There are multiple siege engines available in this battleground as well, each serving their own purpose, which makes it much more interesting and fun to play. All this and more amounts to many different ways to win the game, which requires absolute focus at all times.

    Wintergrasp
Wintergrasp is an area in Northrend where battle is openly exchanged between the Alliance and the Horde, with quests and queue available at level 78. Games can take up to 30 minutes, with a 2 hour waiting period in-between each. The main objective of Wintergrasp is to either capture or defend the fortress, by use of vehicles. As you kill enemies of the opposing faction, your standing will level up, allowing you to use more powerful vehicles. Winning this battle is important to some, as your faction must be in control of Wintergrasp Fortress in order to put together a group for raiding Vault of Archavon.

    Now go PvP or something.

    End-Game Content

    Raiding
Once someone has achieved level 80, one of the first things they'll jump into is raiding. Raiding is, more or less, a group of 10, 25, or 40 people fighting together against monsters or bosses. For the Wrath of the Lich King expansion, most people will raid in what is known as Icecrown Citadel, fighting their way through to The Lich King. Just because you're level 80 doesn't mean you have to raid, but if you wish to get better gear and be of more use in fights, I would strongly advise it. In addition to gear, there are other perks from raiding, including gold, reputation, achievements, and much more. Raiding is just one of the many aspects of the game, so try to find a balance between this and other aspects to make your adventure in Azeroth enjoyable.

    Ventrilo
For nearly any Guild that raids, using Ventrilo is required. Ventrilo is a program where people may gather together to exchange words, making co-ordination in raids more viable.

More information regarding Ventrilo and where to download the program can be found here.
    http://www.ventrilo.com/

    Dungeons
In addition to raiding, some people like to take the time to do Heroic Dungeons at level 80. These dungeons are available for queue by use of the Dungeon Finder, which may have been used for grouping at lower levels. Besides the content of the dungeons, and an added difficulty, there's not much of a difference. However, when bosses are killed in these dungeons, players will receive the newly introduced Justice Points, which will allow for the buying of Epic Level gear. In this, there may be perks, and help players more raid-capable for higher level raids.

    Talent Points and Glyphs
With the introduction of patch 4.0.1, all classes spells and talents were overhauled, reverting back to a more focused talent tree, such like that back in Vanilla. Once level 80, players will have a total of 34 talent points at their disposal. 31 of these points must be placed into one of their three talent trees first, before spending any other talent points. With this, players will now be able to take advantage of the also introduced mastery skill, which has its advantages for each class and tree. Through reforging gear, players will be able to increase their mastery skill, which can provide many benefits.

The new and improved talent trees can be viewed and experimented on Blizzard's website, found here.
    http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classes/talent-index/

In addition to talents, players can also make use of glyphs for bonuses to their spells. For each talent tree, players will be able to choose 3 prime, 3 major, and 3 minor glyphs to use. Also with patch 4.0.1, when players learn a glyph, they will be able to re-use it in the future as many times as they want, granted they have enough vanishing powder to compensate for their changes. This will allow players to experiment with their glyphs, finding which ones are best for maximum damage or healing. Vanishing powder is required to change a glyph, and can be purchased for a small amount in any major city.

    Guilds
On every server, there are hundreds of Guilds that have been created by multiple people. Some Guilds may for raiding, leveling, sociable, or more. These Guilds may be open to all players, but a few of the top Guilds on the server ranked for their raiding accomplishments may require an application to join. Guilds may also be created by oneself, requiring a Guild name, some signatures, and a few gold to create. This can present many opportunities for new players to join something already established, and to achieve some things many others have not.

    Expansions
Expansions will allow you to progress in the world of Azeroth. Their have been multiple expansions added to the game over the years to ensure gameplay would continue to be fresh, updated, and exciting for those to still play. These expansions include new zones, new instances and raids, new level caps, and so much more. One is never required to buy them, but if you wish to advance, I would advise purchasing them.

Below are the expansions available, and information on each.

    Achievements
As of patch 3.0.2, Achievements were added to the game by Blizzard. More or less, this addition will track objectives that you complete achievement-worthy, or those that would be consider as a Feat of Strength. Some people log on daily, making it their objective to gain as many achievement points as the can for the day. One may worry that these achievements may run out, but with each new content update, I'm sure more achievements will be added to the game.

An in-depth detail of Achievements may be found here:
    http://www.wowwiki.com/Achievement

    Reputation
Reputation is your current standing with a certain faction. There are many different factions in the game that one can get reputation for, and achievements may come for such gains. Some people may choose the Human Race to help with this, as they get a 10% bonus for each reputation gain. This content can be incredibly boring for most, but something enjoyable to do to pass the time. I find some of these reputations very difficult to gain, which leaves a good sense of accomplishment when finished, but others are easy to gain, which one should have no problem doing.

    Go have fun. :)

    Earning Money

    What is Gold?
Gold is the currency in the World of Warcraft, which has its many purposes. You can buy armor, gear, mounts, pets, level professions, and much more. However, this may not be required, as some can gather these things by themself, and sell the items for a decent amount. There are many ways to make gold, including raiding, professions, playing the auction house, and more.

    Raiding/Quests
Raiding and questing can at times tie together, but quests are more useful once someone gains the max level, as they will earn additional gold for the lack of need of experience. Players can complete up to 25 daily quests a... day, which some use to their advantage, making around 500-1000 gold per day. Raiding has its way of making money too, as with the killing of bosses and dropping of gear(s), some can make a fair amount. This I say for players will loot gold for killing bosses, and their are multiple raids players may do when at max level. Also, gear may drop (green/blue/purple), which may be disenchanted if not needed and sold on the Auction House for profit.

    Bank/Auction House
Their are banks in any major city, and others located around Azeroth accessible by both factions; this also includes Auction Houses. One major place for the use of these is Booty Bay, as the area includes a few purposes (weekly fishing contest, gurubashi arena). The bank may be updated to have a total of 7 bank slots, with the price increasing for each one desired.

The Auction House can, more or less, speak for itself. The purpose of the AH is to assist players in the selling of goods, which some may use for a massive proft. With some of the end-game content, players have discovered, by the use of addons or sale patterns, what they can do to make money from the auction house. With the introduction of patch 4.0.1, one of my friends was able to profit 550,000 gold from gems only, as many players rushed to respect their talents and adjust their gear to maximize their damage and/or healing once again.

Take the time, find a balance, and profit.

    Professions
Professions may very well have an endless use to the making of gold, as some are always in demand. Professions such as herbalism and mining may make gold in their own respect by the farming of materials, but can also be turned around with the use of other professions for making gold. With herbalism, one could also be an alchemist, creating elixirs, flasks, and potions that are bought every day. With mining it goes the same way, but with blacksmithing. This will allow the creation of gear(s), which may sell for a great amount. There may be additional materials required for gear, such as frozen orbs, crusader orbs, or primordial saronite that are gathered by raiding, but some will still be able to buy such items from other players and still make a considerable profit.

    Mounts/Pets
Mounts and pets are fun addition to the game, which some take very seriously. The majority of mounts in the game must be obtained by oneself, as their are many pets in the game available for auction. In this, there is certainly gold to be made, which some take advantage of. By use of the neutral auction house, some transfer Alliance pets to a Horde character, and vice versa. These pets may be unobtainable by one faction, but available by the other, which allows for gold to be earned. Alternatively, there are many pets that can be farmed or gathered in the game. Some may be much easier that others, but in the end, it will come down to how much gold you're wishing to earn.

    Latest patch notes:

    Battle.net
Battle.net may be linked with an existing World of Warcraft account for added security. Also, one may purchase an authenticator, which requires one to enter your regular password, and the one provided by the authenticator in order to log in. This makes it nearly impossible to be hacked, which in my opinion, is one of the greatest additions to the game by Blizzard.

    What are WoW addons?

Addons are made by other users and are used to aid the user by preforming various functions. These functions range from allowing you to collect all of your mail at once, posting multiple auctions at once, or alerting you of your threat in the latest raid.
