    [Womba]Pokemon Competitive Battle Guide[Womba]

Today I will be explaining the basics of competitive battling. If you need help on a team or whatnot, you are free to challenge me via Shoddy Battle.

    *NEW*
    Battle vs Video

We both played well. I kinda fucked up on the aerodactyl. I hate those things. I had already seen his curselax, so I wanted to preserve my Machamp. My plan was to take the EQ/Rock slide on Rotom, but get off a will o' wisp to save my machamp. I would have lost probobly if I didnt get the toxic off on the smeargle. I was able to stall him out and make sure the Snorlax didn't have a subsitute. I predicted the t-bolt twice in the battle, the first time went he went into Jolteon, and the second time when I then switched into Flygon. I didnt want to overpredict, so I took the tbolt on my blissey. He got unlucky with some confusion-hax, but thats why I have a machamp! This was the first battle. 3-0 Me

I lost the second :D, my TTar failed to crit him with stone edge so I lost 1-0 Him

    3rd battle

Specs Scept is a monster in any situation (OU/UU/UBER), and took down a significant portion of him team.

If you're gonna say I whored out with my blissey, then fuck you :D, its a different and non standard set. He had 5 OUs and one BL, I had 5 OUs and an UU.

We ended up going 2-1 with me winning overall
GG video, I had some annoying hax but thats how the game goes

    I also beat cosrob BTW

First some necessities on a team.

A fast pokemon with good attack/special attack. This is called a sweeper. Examples would be Lucario, Infernape, Jolteon and Salamence. The whole point is to have a diverse movepool to 1 hit ko any pokemon it faces.

A Pokemon with good defense/special defense. This is a tank. They take attacks that would wipe out any other Pokemon. Examples are Swampert, Blissey, Clefable, Hypno, Skarmory, and Blastoice.

The goal is to have two sweepers, one with high attack, and the other with high special attack. If a Latias (Special Sweeper) is facing a blissey (Special Wall) you're kinda fucked. The answer would be to send in a Hitmonlee to absorb the potential T-Wave (Limber Ability) and then get off a physical based Close Combat on the Special based Blissey.

It is the same thing for tanks. One with high special defense, and the other wise high defense. In the situation before, the Blissey could be switched out for a Skarmory, to absorb the close combat. Skarmory is a great physical wall, and would take little damage from a close combat.

Just some basic subsections of pokemon
    Code:
Cleric: A pokemon that passes or wishes to heal other pokes. e.g Jirachi
Spiker: A poke that lays down spikes. e.g Froslass
Toxic Spiker: A poke that lays down toxic spikes. e.g Nidoqueen.
Spinner: A pokemon that uses rapid spin to clear entry hazards. e.g Hitmontop.
    Fat pink whore: Blissey
Sub(punching/seeding/minding): Any poke that uses subsitute in coordination
with another move. e.g Sub-seeding Shaymin
    Tier: A group of pokemon
Uber: The Uber tier. These pokemon are incredibly strong. E.G Darkrai
OU: The Over Used Tier. These pokemon are the commonly used pokemon. E.G Infernape
UU: Under used tier. E.G Registeel
NU: Never Used tier. E.G Flareon
Phazer: Pseudo-Hazer. A pokemon that has a move similar to haze
that negate any stat changes. These pokemon are used to stop sweeps E.G Swampert with roar.

Choice items are very important. These items raise a pokes stat by +1, but they can only use one move until switched out. Many pokes carry the move "trick" and a choice item, so they can cripple the opposing poke (normally a wall) by switching items. Here is a list of choice items

    Code:
Choice Specs - Raises Sp. Attack one stage
Choice Scarf - Raises Speed one stage
Choice Band - Raises Attack one stage

Easy ways to stop a sweep!

Physical sweepers are very common in HG/SS. Dragon Dance and Swords Dance are common moves, and coupled with priority moves can sweep a whole team. The not so obvious response to this is abilities. Abilities like “Intimidate” reduce the attack stat of the first pokemon encountered by 1. This means a +2 Lucario is now a +1 Lucario, often changing the outcome of a game. The other option is abilities like “Static” and “Flame body. When pokemon with those abilities are attacked, they have a 30% of being paralyzed or burned respectively. Poison point is also an option but not advised, as the poison is the normal poison, not toxic poison. Burn will lower the attack stat of the pokemon, and paralyze will slow it down.

If you are being swept by a raindance team constantly, I would recommend using Toxicroag. Toxicroag's ability "Dry Skin" is similar to water absorb in that all water attacks used on it do not do damage. In the rain "Dry Skin" Also heals HP. So it is a combination of "Rain Dish" and "Water Absorb".

My anti rain dance Toxicroag set

This was a 3-0, battle. It was semi close. Still GG mang

He lost because of some unlucky crits, but also he didn't have a counter for ape. Getting the vacuum wave crit was meaningless, as he was already -1 attack. He pretty much allowed me to set up. The real counter on his team was already dead. Heatran was meaningless. It wasn't scarfed so even if it was alive a +2 vacuum wave from a timid special ape would kill it.
Heres a lulzy UU match, in which I demonstrate why you should use a Toxicroag

    Berrys

Berrys are very important in pokemon. A single berry can change the outcome of a game. For example lum berry salamence can outrage, then cure it's confusion with the lum. A heatran with occa can take the earthquake from a swampert, then fire back a HP Grass. Yache berry sub sweepers can decimate slow teams with minimal setting up.
Consult this for berry help http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Berries#List_of_Berries_3

    Wallbreaking

If you hate walls, this will help you a bunch. In OU walls are annoying. Blissey, Skarmory, and Suicune are the three most common. The way to defeat these walls is not to use a super effective move, but to either status the wall, or use a move that exploits the wall's weakness. E.G For Blissey I often use a Dugtrio to trap the Blissey. Blisseys have high Sp. Def but only a base of 10 Defense, and with Dugtrio's ability "Arena Trap" Blissey cannot switch out to avoid a physically based attack. Skarmorys have a base 140 Defense, but low Sp. Def. Any specially based attacks rip through a Skarmory.

Sometimes for walls that set up (Suicune, CM Blissey) I use perish song. Rather than simply roaring, perish song can kill a pokemon. When Perish song is used, both pokemon have 3 turns to switch out, but if they don't, they are killed. If the opponent's only poke left is a CM Suicune, they cannot switch out, and are thus dead.

This will be updated with a variety of things. like EV tips, OU/UU/NU Strategy, sub seeding, para-flinch-fusion (AKA AWESOME) and more

You should specify that the team you described is a "standard" team, and give an example.
You might also want to include a purely offensive team and a stall team, as they are both effective in the metagame.

To be honest, it's a fairly slapdash and badly organized guide that misses some important topics. If you're going to update it, good.

    http://www.smogon.com/dp/articles/intro_comp_pokemon

That's an excellent example of an introduction to competitive battling.

    Work on the format, alot!

Also, add items other then berry's items like choice band or life orb can be great on certain pokemon. My deoxys@life orb with maxed attack and spec attack with attack form can destroy, hell, deoxys could have his own section of a guide, with the different forms he can be EV'd like a fucking bomb.

Theres my 2 cents lol, im liking the guide so far. :)

    Oh and Serebii.net >Smogon

    Deoxys is an uber lol.
also specs modest jolteon wrecks deoxys, no matter what form. So does any spiritomb, dugtrio, or ho oh
yeah, I will talk about choice items
again I have written all of this so far in my iPod touch, as I don't have accses to my computer ATM.
And no lol, smogon has more movesets, tiers, tournaments, and hosts it's own shoddy battle server. Serebeii just has like game walltrhoughs etc. Also
    the smogon forums are helpful.
Do you like my team though

Well i link you to the rules :)

    http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=290790

    Sleep Clause

You can't use sleep inducing moves in opponent's Pokémon when there's another Pokémon in his/her team asleep. Yawn can't be used to PseudoHaze (make opponent switch) when there's another Pokémon asleep caused by you. When the asleep Pokémon awakes or faints, you're free to make another Pokémon of his/her team asleep. Sleeping being caused by Effect Spore or Rest are disconsidered from Sleep Clause.

    Species Clause

You can't use two of the same Pokémon in a team.

    No Hacks

Don't need to explain, you are prohibited to use any illegally obtained Pokémon. Hacking parents to breed is also unaccepted, but people can't control this just looking at the stats. Hacking Pokémon with "legit stats" is also not allowed.

    No Ubers

Uber Pokémon are overpowered Pokémon. Since these are "Standard Rules" you have to use the "Standard Pokémon".
    The current uber list:
    Arceus
    Darkrai
    Deoxys (all forms)
    Dialga
    Garchomp
    Giratina
    Giratina-O
    Groudon
    Ho-oh
    Kyogre
    Latias (With Soul Dew)
    Latios
    Lugia
    Manaphy
    Mew
    Mewtwo
    Palkia
    Rayquaza
    Shaymin-S
    Wobbuffet

    No Disconnecting

You can't turn off your DS or move away from signal range to end a battle. People can have weak routers so don't always fight with the people if he/she disconnected. Not exactly a rule, but an ethic sense.

    Self KO - NOT STANDARD!

You can't use Destiny Bond, Perish Song, Selfdestruct or Explosion to force a tie. People usually dislike the fact he/she lost the last Pokémon in a battle, the rule exists, but it's rarely added as standard since it's also a strategy.

Actually You can't use 2 of pralysis and frozen and stuff inducing moves in opponent's Pokémon when there's another Pokémon in his/her team

    Basically it

Latias is an uber currently. Smogon rules are what are generally accepted by the pokemon battling community.

    You forgot evasion clause
Species clause, and like 20 others lol. People play with different clauses. Some people don't allow "broken" pokes (CB Scizor, Spore Sub-Punch Breeloom)
And is is acceptable to hack pokemon, as long as they have legit moves EVs IVs and natures.

Serebeii is for walkthroughs and noobs, :D Sorry mate.
    Wynaut is also an uber

Thanks for the rules though :D

    :(

    You're using legendaries D:
Therefor, I hate your team. (it's actually pretty well-balanced if you ask me)

My favorite types of teams are batonpass/subsitute teams.

Serebii is very useful... smogon is too, but it's more fun to make up your own strategies D:

OT: Not a bad guide, kind of scattered and somewhat lacking in-depth qualities, but pokemon is hard to explain if you play it right.

Il go by Smogon rules for uber and not.

I didn't make them i just copied the rules from serebii forum (probably 2years old lol) Yeah all the clause i forgot ill play with.

Since when was there broken pokes ( i really have never heard of it)

But i would allow it since my team is made up of one of them.

Yes hacks are allowed if they dont have perfect 31 ivs and 255 evs

Once again i just copied the rules.

Serebii is for lazy people who dont want to right everything up lol

    btw my fc is: 1376 3304 0959
