Getting a Beginner's Java Compiler​

******Before doing anything, download the Java SE Development Kit at https://cds.sun.com/is-bin/INTERSHO...ProductRef=jdk-6u16-oth-JPR@CDS-CDS_Developer.******

1) The first and most important thing to do is download the compiler itself. The download can be found here http://www.drjava.org/download.shtml. Click the download according to if you have Windows or Mac OSX.

**Note** This is totally FREE!

2) After you have downloaded the compiler from the Dr. Java website, open the compiler up.

3) After opening it up, the Dr. Java logo will pop up.



4) After the logo disappears, the compiler will show.



5) This is where the guide helps people set up the compiler correctly so that you can correctly program with Java. You have to download two classpaths called bookclasses and mediasources. You can download both of these below.

6) After downloading these, we have to complete the last and most important step to begin programming in Java correctly. Make sure your compiler is open. On the top panel, click edit and then preferences.



Then you will get a page that looks like this. Click Add as soon as the screen pops up.



Then go to the folder that has your bookclasses folder and click the bookclasses folder and hit select. After, double click the bookclasses folder and go inside. Hit control and click three things. Those three things are javazoom.jar, jmf.jar, and sound.jar. Then hit select and hit apply and then OK.

I would highly recommend Eclipse. 10x easier for beginners.

 

I see. I actually like Dr. Java though because it was helpful to me as a beginner and this is the compiler we use for beginners at our school. Also, this was the compiler I knew how to set-up correctly.

 

You have compiler confused with IDE. The JDK includes the compiler that you're going to use (javac), wheras DrJava is the IDE.

Also, do the jars that you're adding to your classpath have any real purpose outside of the class that you're taking?

 

My fault on that and yes they do. Also, it shows how to set classpaths. I will try to add some lessons/things from my book.
