Obviously he's looking for a new laptop.

If I were you Daily, I would probably get the HP that's very similar to the Acer. I've had the HP for about 2-3 years now and I've had very little problems with it and it still runs super fast - and that's without anti-virus shields installed. You should be able to find a nice one on HP's website for under $800 for sure.

I dont suggest that same one....

I have windows vista 64 bit on my hp....

It has far to many problems with it. I suggest getting windows 7, xp, or vista 32 bit.

    good luck.

    Buying a laptop..

Guys, the ONLY thing I'm concerned with is hardware. I have and will install Windows XP upon receiving the laptop.

And Graham, which HP laptop would you be speaking about?

It is a gift from his Grandma, not for his grandma.

That laptop is a really good deal, but I have no experience with Acer so I couldn't tell you if it is going to hold up.

I have had really good experience with HP. I have purchased a desktop and a laptop from them, the prices are good and the computers are quality.

Another positive, their customer service is based in Kentucky, so no hard-to-understand-Indian. That was a major bonus for me when I called in to track the shipping.

It's pretty good for a laptop. Netbooks are nice too.

Id get a desktop instead, or preferrably make her one.

PROTIP: Buy a Phenom II X4 940, I just did, and it's amazing.

pretty good laptops, 9600 gt's arn't very good but it is all you need. You'll be able to play most games on higher settings but definitely not crysis

you can build a very good desktop for 1000$.

e8500, diamond 4850, 500 gig hard drive, etc etc. Should keep you under 1000$ as long as you download windows illegally. Better yet get 64 bit with 8 gigs of corsair?

Yea, listen to EpicBMX! Get an Acer so it can break down on you the first night you get it, and you get to spend the exact same amount in getting it fixed because the parts in them are so old no one knows where to find them!

If you want someone cheap, maintainable, reliable, efficient, "built with parts not from the 1900's", and compatible with any OS you want, Compaq is what you want.

I would always suggest Dell. The XPS series is really good for gaming. But what exactly are you going to be doing with your laptop? Gaming or GFXing or just browsing internet?

His spending limit is $1000, and XPS don't run under $999.99, that is if you want it new. However you can most likely get a refurb off of eBay for cheaper which I don't recommend due to previous experiences.
