How do you/would you treat a mentally challenged person?

If a mentally challenged person was in line behind you and they did something odd they really couldn't help, and one of your friends made a joke about them. Would you laugh? Would you be like "grow up"? or if it was just you there, would u move up in line to get away from them? Or would you just not let it bother you, even if it sorta was? If you felt like laughing would you hold it in?

I personally think that even if they have a certain disorder, that they still be treated the same as us, cause the truth is they are. There can be super smart people trapped in a body that won't do as they say in some cases.

This dosent exactly go along with the topic, but dont you fell sorry for those mentaly challenged people? like, you see a mentaly challend person, and someone makes a joke right in front of them and their family, and you cant help but wana knife the insulter and cry for the mental person..... its sad really.............if one of my freinds make a joke about a mentaly challend person.... id give em a pop in the temple.... a good knock-out.... thats wat i normally do anyway...

 

Meh. I would just tell them to shut up.

 

I would tell them thats not very nice and , say something like" would you like it if you were mentally challenged and someone said that to you?"

Because they cant help it can they and im sure they want to be normal.

 

I'm not a very sympathetic person at all. I realize that it isn't the fault of the person with the defect, but that doesn't faze me much. In my mind, if society weren't as overly caring as it is today, nature would have made sure that that person wouldn't have survived to that age. I wouldn't laugh in that situation as I don't find jokes about retarded people funny since I hear them so often, but I wouldn't feel sorry for the guy either.

 

tbh im not into the "dont make fun of people they cant help it" thing.. they will forget you made fun of them in about 30 seconds after you do.

id tell them to stfu if they were being loud, i would tell them to get off me if they touched me. plain and simple. idc

 

Nah, I mean it makes me sick some times that people do that. Like I mean yeah you treat them normal like telling them no to things you don't like or want. But you don't make fun of then, laugh at them, or point and stare. I used to be the person who went around putting people in there place as I called it. Where some one who makes fun of some one else, I would simply crush them and verbally abuse them in one sentence. I have realized since then that I am only sinking to their level, and adding to their pain that makes them do what they do.

 

Sometimes I capture retards with nets and throw them into a bamboo cage so that I can laugh and poke sticks at them.
It rubs the lotion on it's skin...

But honestly, their just treatment depends. If the person is retarded, treat them like you would a child. But if you're talking about other disorders as well, it varies too much.

 

Treatment of the mentally handicapped should be extremely important, and they
should be treated with respect.
It's not their fault that they contracted this handicap and they shouldn't be an outcast of society for being so.

Many of my relatives are mentally handicapped so I learned how to be sensitive to the issue. In most cases they are just children in adult bodies, but you need to make sure to treat them as equals because everyone has feelings.

I dont think you should treat them different. I mean people think theyre being so fucking humane by talking real slow to them, and holding their hand and whatever. But I mean, if they dont understand something, they just dont. And thats that. Talking slow wont help, hand motions wont help. Sometimes you can get your point across, sure. But overall.. No. And laughing at them is just stupid because it could just as easily be you or someone in your family. I know some bitchy people, they laugh at everyone but they wont tolerate retarded jokes because they know retarded people. To me, laughing at a retarded person is like being racist, or sexist. Its judging someone for something they cant control when there are plenty of people out there who you might assume to be decent because they are the race/sex/mental capacity that you prefer and yet they suck. End of story. Ive met some fucking decent retarded people. And just because parts of their brain dont work deffinately doesnt make them stupid. But then there are the ones that are just gone. Nothing up there. Those I think are the least funny of all. But I dont feel sorry for them. Mainly because they dont give a fuck what a few assholes think. They dont care. People like Charlie in Flowers for Algernon, I feel bad for them because theyre smart enough to realize people look down on them. And people like that should know that whoever is looking down at them is the one whose retarded.

 

They scare me so I try to ignore em or if they confront me I'll be nice.
