    Server 2003 VPN Acting Weird

So I have a Computer running Server 2003, and it is configured so it can be used as a VPN.

Everything works correctly, I can access the local machine, and all my internet traffic is sent through the VPN.

However, the speeds I get are very confusing.

Sending my Internet Traffic through the VPN I can get about 50MBPS Down and 40 MBPS up.

For a rough estimate I have the internet connection, even when sent through my VPN, to download a full cd (700 megabytes) in less than 2 minutes.

When I transfer files from my server using a FTP connection I get about 100MBPS down off of it, which is what my maximum throughput is as I am on a 100 megabit switch.

When I try to copy files through windows filesharing I only get about 20 MBPS.

Can someone explain what is happening? I should not get more speed running an internet speedtest through my VPN which is on my local network than from copying files from my VPN to my computer which is on the same network.

Well, with copying you have to take hardware bottle necking into account. I mean, as an example, I have a 2TB 6GB/s USB 3.0 external that doesn't write at the 6gb/s that the drive can handle or 5gb/s that USB 3.0 can handle. It still took me over 6 hours to transfer 1.2TB where at 5gb/s it should have taken like 4 minutes. My school's internet speed is 95mb/s down, but when downloading I can't even touch that.

It is not hardware bottlenecking. When I skip the VPN and put both of the computers on the same router I get 100MBPS transfer speeds on file copies.

Maybe your ISP is capping your speed?
