    Some old large pieces

Just thought I'd share these with you guys. I recently remembered I had a deviantart laying around somewhere, and I was once into the large piece scene. Might be interesting to see the stuff I used to do. Kind of thinking of getting back into it again soon.

(drawn elements combined with illustrator colouring and composition + other effects in photoshop)

(nearly 800 faves and 24k views, and featured in several articles on deviantart. Didn't even realise it had gained so much attention until now (I stopped checking dA for about a year))

(bit of an older one, but a photomanip nonetheless showing my development in using textures and impact type effects)

(one of my earliest photomanips, you can tell from the poor blending, but was more of a colour and idea experiment at the time)

Have a bunch of my earlier (albeit much crappier, and experimental) works on my deviantart: spraynwipe.deviantart.com

Now I see so many blatant flaws that could have been easily fixed, but it's still nice to look back.

Mate those PSD's are long lost, from my old computer. And you aren't the first to ask either haha. As far as I can remember, it was a few different stock images including various gears, a camera lens or two, and some clockwork type stocks for the background to give it that old fashioned look. I was going for a dark, aged steampunk theme, and it had to look like some sort of machine, hence the gears I joined together on top of it all. For this style of manip, it's mainly a matter of finding some good resources, rendering them and deciding how best to position them in terms of composition and theme/concecpt. Then colouring and effects come after that. Colouring and lighting are extremely important for photomanips and should be done to instill a nice atmosphere in a piece.

I'd love to give the large pieces another crack when I have some more time (and potentially a new computer) over Christmas hopefully.

Is started working my way to LA a few months ago before I took a long GFX break for writing, and now I am back at tagging again.

Yeah I've been a bit over tagging for the past 6 months or more, just a dying art for me these days and I've had more than enough of it the last 7 years. Now I'm mostly just doing graphics requests to improve my 3d and web design skills. As soon as I can find some inspiration, I'll get back into tagging or large pieces again (it's a phase thing..).

I actually did some web design a few months back, nothing good - actually it all pretty much sucked. It was just basic things. I just don't really find fun in a lot of graphic design anymore, now that I am in college and I got all of this stuff I have to do it is just more of a hassle than not to sit down and spend an hour on a tag when I could be writing my research paper that is due Monday. :p

I like this, but the execution and composition aren't great, it just looks like it's layered with different styles of effects with no actual relation of the background to the vexel, vexel to the effects, effects to the other effects, etc. Vexelling's quite nicely done on the eyes/lips but the nose is pretty odd, with the thin white line on the nose not suiting very well (it's unneeded and too sharp anyways). Effects are quite nice too, but the whole piece doesn't really go together as a piece, rather small parts combined together slightly crudely.

This is a far nicer composition, though it's pretty common with digital art. I like the elements but there are a few things bugging me, firstly the faded gear shape on the right side (in the middle vertically) is pretty badly erased with a soft-brush (making it seem quite amateur), along with similarly soft-erased left side.

Apart from that and a slight want for it to be blended more with the clouds (for example making the clouds slightly darker and blending the black c4d with the darker clouds like at the bottom), it's a wonderful piece.

That's all i have the effort to critique, cool pieces though :)

Cheers man, loving the CnC :) I'd love to go back and clean them up properly if only I still had the PSDs.
