Also need help on setting up a server at College

So I go to Purdue University, and I was looking at ways to open up my server to my friends and my brother so we could play. The problem is I want to use a bukkit server, but I can't port forward because I don't have a router. My room literally just has 2 Ethernet ports that I plug into. Is there any way to set up a bukkit server without a router?

    Thanks!

Well, im a freshman at a private school with a campus, so I switch buildings almost every period. I use "Logmein Hamachi" which seems to connect to whatever WiFi you're on, and KIND OF portforward it.

The only downfall is that it doesn't actually portforward, so if someone wants to join your server, they need the program, and your server name and password. This isn't THAT bad because you could just post them on the thread...

    Anywaysss... Heres the link

    Hamachi

I don't use a router for my server. Modems should automatically have all the ports you need already forwarded. If not, just fork over 40 dollars for a good router, or for a VPS.

You should be sure your connection won't work for a server though too, if you haven't already. To do this, downloading and set up the bukkit server, run it so the CMD window comes up and you can see the Java process going on in the processes, go here: http://canyouseeme.org/ , and put in 25565 and check to see if it's open. If it is, then you're good.

It's also likely, however, that your university connects all LANs to a central router. To access that to forward a port, you'd have to know the router admin password.

That's why Hamachi is so much easier. You don't need to pay or portforward to separate routers or even one! NO PORT FORWARDING. Trust me, so much easier and better in my opinion.

One period I'm in study hall on BAINT Wifi and the next I'm on JBAINT, it just works flawlessly...

Hamachi is easier in some cases, but everyone who plays on a hamachi server is required to download Hamachi, and not everyone is willing to do that, let alone take the time to learn Hamachi in general.

This would be a problem if he were trying to open up a public server. The OP says he's only opening it for his friend and his brother

True, he would just have to get all of his friends to download hamachi.

@OP If you are willing to get all your friends to download hamachi then that is the easiest route.
