Anyone else want to start forums?

I've always wanted to start my own forums (and actually have attempted a couple of times), but have never REALLY known where/how to start. Has anyone else had this problem?

Also, would anyone be interested in starting something?!

Also curious as to how sythe got started. Once things get rolling, it makes sense. But how did it start in the VERY beginning?

 

I thought it would be cool. Then I realized I just wanted to be the boss, that I would rule with an iron fist, and that everyone would leave resulting in a waste of my time all together.

Yeah, my current adventure is setting up a college forum where people talk about first year experiences, were theyre going, etc. And maybe have sections for relationship problems, professor problems, general chat, class help, notes, making money in college, and of course a STORIES section. And maybe if it takes off start a paid membership section or something. I'm not sure though as this was just a random thought tonight lol

forums are a bigger job then you'd expect...Just randomly starting a forum isn't a great idea.

 

This is correct, I don't believe the actual forum went up until 2005 and I don't even think it was originally called Sythe. I know the bots were, but I think the forum was labeled something else.

What do you mean? All your resources are online. Only "resource" would be money. And I completely understand if thats the resource you don't have

Starting the forum itself isn't a forum. Use a free hosting like proboards or install a forum feature on your website and you're all set.
The major problem is getting people to use your forums.

If lots of people knew and had respect for you, you wouldn't have much trouble at all.
But if you're a newfag, you'll go through a lot of hard work.

Sure, the idea about sharing your first year college experience is great, and yes people would like to share it.
But why would they want to do that on your forum?
This is something you have to think about.

 

I have a great idea for a blog or online forum that I've had growing in my mind for a few months now, and I hope someday in the future to maybe make it into a reality and get the idea off the ground. I have ONLY discussed it with my Dad, and he thinks it is a fantastic idea and would be very helpful to many people, so it is something that I definitely keep in the back of my head at all times.

I imagine that there is tons of work that goes into owning a blog or forum on a daily basis, probably far more than any of us could imagine. But it would be really cool, and its easier than ever to do with all the modern technology and access to the internet that most people have nowadays.

What kind of forum were you wanting to start?
