Sythe Crawled for E-Mails

There's not much of a way to stop this. You could try doing something like:
big pockets at live dot com and then say without the spaces

 

Support, though Gmail is epic enough to spam box most of them

I have many of these - never thought Sythe would be the root - you just opened my eyes.

Support, the forum is pretty outdated anyway. We want new.

 

This is a route of my problem aswell, Since i signed up with sythe im getting daily mail containing Runescape Phish.

 

Same problem with me, I never used to get phishing emails until I made a sythe account

 

Been going on for years, i'd love to see an update to some how stop this, as all my emails are just spammed with wow/rs phishing emails.

 

I've been pushing the idea of an upgrade for a long time. It's not that we don't want to do it, there's just a hell of a lot of issues we'd have to face when it comes to migrating users, posts, threads and modifications.

 

Not entirely true.

As Jagex pointed out, 'phishers' generate random mass email addresses and send the emails out through that type of system, therefore it was not necessarily Sythe which was the source of your email address.

There are many unique and positive features through an upgraded vB however I really do not think all the work in upgrading the current one would be worth it.

However if the staff team (or even Sythe himself) have considered an upgrade and the only thing preventing this from occurring is simply the 'issues' you'd face from transferring all the necessary data, then I'm sure the community would not mind if yous took the time in doing so.

 

Not keeping the forum up to date is very dangerous in terms of security.. Many forums gets screwed over because they feel it would be too much trouble to migrate to the next version. I recommend you update the forums ASAP for the safety of the users and the welfare of the site.

 

It's not that simple. The databases would need to be converted and there is a high risk of data loss. Then after you get all that sorted there are a bunch of modifications that would need to be redone. Hopefully it will be done someday but it is a lot of work and would most likely result in some data loss.

 

What type of data loss are we talking about? (i.e. on what scale)

 

Depends how much of the massive database is not easily transferred. And there are going to be things that slip through the cracks no matter what happens.

 

If it was possible to click a button and instantly upgrade everything without any issues, we'd do it. Perhaps some of you have the idea that upgrading the software this forum is using is analogous to, say, upgrading your operating system on your computer. It is not. This site is a production system with hundreds of thousands of users.

The risk of data loss is only one problem.

Among other things, vB3 styles don't work on vB4 (this is well known and can be confirmed by a simple Google search) so our styles would need to be remade (all of them, including Mobile and NextGen/Lite); there are many plugins, scripts, and code fixes written by Sythe, Matthew and myself which probably won't carry over too well; there are third-party products installed which are meant only for this version of vBulletin, and definitely cannot be carried over...

I had to use an archive link from a few months ago because the site is currently down... regardless, try visiting the top sites listed here - NONE of them are on vB4. Hell, SomethingAwful, one of the largest and best-known sites on the Internet, still uses vBulletin 2.2.9!

Of course vBulletin.com will always upgrade to the latest version of their own software, because doing anything else would look bad for business. Aside from them, can you name any sites anywhere near (or larger than) the size of Sythe.org that have upgraded from vB3 to vB4?

If you don't want your email to be harvested against your will, then do not post it publicly here or anywhere. Simple as that.

 

Hmm, I've seen it on other Forums and I don't know if Sythe is capable of doing it but it is the censoring of emails and links from unregistered members. I know it won't be of that much help, but I still feel as though it will change the mass of phishing e-mails that are sent to our addresses ripped from the site.

I don't use my main email account for Sythe so it doesn't bother me in the slightest. I don't even look at my emails connected to this account, MSN is all I need

 

Could we at least upgrade to 3.8.x? There's a TON of mods for it.

Also if we upgrade to 4.0, I'm leaving. Can't stand that ugly forum design.
