Sythe Crawled for E-Mails

Everyone knows this occurs, and I feel like it's something that few realize the origin of the matter.

A few months ago, I created a new e-mail account, and posted it in ONE thread on Sythe in the middleman forums. I wanted it to be used for nothing but MMing, obviously, and so it was a brand new account, never used anywhere else.

Well, circumstances changed, I never used the account, forgot about it, etc.

Today I logged into my e-mail to roughly 20 phishing e-mails and a gmail welcome letter. Needless to say, Sythe was obviously the source of such and made me wonder exactly how safe the users who post their emails are, not to mention those who put them in their signature.

As I browse my 10 different hotmail accounts, I notice a trend dating back several years of phishing emails. The only ones with a mass number of such are those that were at one point connected with my Sythe account.

Suggestions should be made to fix this situation. Maybe restrict the viewing of e-mails to registered members only, or something. It's clearly done by a robot, and on this scale it'd have to be done by an unregistered user.

Sythe has lots of downtime issues, and something like this could be very resource intensive. I believe doing something about this would benefit us all greatly.


E: This is not in suggestions as I haven't a full solution to the problem, I'm merely pointing out the existence of a problem .

 

One of the several reasons why I believe this forum is long overdue a vBulletin update, there are some fantastic modifications that would allow us to make sure phishers and such crawlers can not function.

 

I agree with that right there. Would save Matt a ton of time not having to code this stuff.

 

I'm no technical wiz or bulletin expert (I like IPB ) so I wont comment on whether updating the board would be beneficial, but this should definitely be fixed. I think realpoor has emails hidden to unregistered users and we should implement the same.

 

soon as i joined sythe i got like 10 gazillion phishing mails and rs account stealing mails, viagra ads etc. admins take note.

 

Posting to keep this thread alive haven't seen a "forum update" since I joined.

 

Not going to lie, I've received a few phishing emails....

 

You don't even want to see my inbox, I get about 6 emails an hour.

EDIT: I'm no expert either, but I wouldn't mind seeing my inbox clean.

 

I like the idea, and it keeps the users safe.

 

I keep my MSN e-mail in my signature as an image for this exact purpose, I also do [at] instead of @ when I post it on threads to make sure I don't receive spam. I like the idea, it'll help.

 

My inbox is clean, but only as all the shit goes to the Junk box. I think an update to the forums would do everyone good. Could save the admins a lot of work too.

 

would be awesome to have something to prevent it, however I think it's too late because all of the current members adresses are already on those lists.
and on the other hand I don't feel like having to fill in an anti bot code in order to see email adresses...

 

While we are all certainly victims of this, the bigger issue is the load bots cause on the server. Enough of them running and fetching emails, and the load level would be ridiculous.

I'm not saying a perfect solution is in order, but I'm sure there's a way to prevent this enough that it at least reduces the number of attempts.

Even if it's just blocking the '@' symbol. I dunno, but something being done prevents future issues.


Also, for those of you using hotmail, I majorly suggest switching to gmail or something. Hotmail is highly unsafe, and is the reason for a lot of hacked accs and such.

 

I get over 10 of these every day, If there is anything that can be done about fixing the problem I would be extremely satisfied and so will others.
