Help with my new desktop build?

Hi, i'm looking to buy myself a nice new desktop. I'm just wondering if all of these components are compatible with each other (I've already checked but it's possible i've made mistakes), and I'm also wondering if the price for the build is okay. Without further ado:

    Case
COOLERMASTER HAF 922 MID TOWER GAMING CASE

    Processor (CPU)
    Intel® Core™i7-2600k Quad Core (3.40GHz, 8MB Cache) + HD Graphics

    Motherboard
    ASUS® SABERTOOTH P67 (NEW REV 3.0): USB 3.0, SATA 6.0GB/s, THERMAL ARMOR!

    Memory (RAM)
    8GB KINGSTON HYPER-X T1 DUAL-DDR3 2133MHz, X.M.P (2 x 4GB KIT)

    Graphics Card
    3GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 580 - 2 DVI, HDMI, DP - 3D Vision Ready
    *Free Item
*FREE Batman Arkham City with any Nvidia® GeForce GTX560 or above!

    Memory - 1st Hard Disk
    600GB VELOCIRAPTOR WD6000HLHX, SATA 6-Gb/s, 32MB CACHE (10,000rpm)

    1st DVD/BLU-RAY Drive
24x DUAL LAYER DVD WRITER ±R/±RW/RAM

    Memory Card Reader
INTERNAL 52 IN 1 CARD READER (XD, MS, CF, SD, etc) + 1 x USB 2.0 PORT

    Power Supply
    CORSAIR 650W ENTHUSIAST SERIES™ TX650 V2-80 PLUS® BRONZE (£72)

    Processor Cooling
    COOLIT ECO II C240 A.L.C (£99)

    Sound Card
ONBOARD 6 CHANNEL (5.1) HIGH DEF AUDIO (AS STANDARD)

    Network Facilities
ONBOARD GIGABIT LAN & WIRELESS 802.11N 300Mbps PCI CARD (£16)

    USB Options
6 x USB 2.0 PORTS @ BACK PANEL (MIN 2 FRONT PORTS) AS STANDARD

    Monitor
    IIYAMA E2273HDS 22" LED WIDESCREEN, HDMI/DVI-D HD1920x1080 (£139

    DVI-D & HDMI Monitor Cables
    1 x 2 METRE GOLD PLATED V1.4 HDMI CABLE (£8)

    Keyboard & Mouse
    LOGITECH® K200 USB MEDIA KEYBOARD (£10)

    Mouse
    LOGITECH® OPTICAL USB MOUSE (£5)

    Speakers
    LOGITECH S120 2.0 BLACK SPEAKER SYSTEM (£9)

    Surge Protection
6 Socket Compact 2M UFO Surge Protector (£9)

    Warranty
3 Year Standard Warranty (1 Month Collect & Return, 1 Year Parts, 3 Year Labour)

The total cost for the build, and delivery from pcspecialist costs £1,749 including monitor, mouse and keyboard. Personally I think that sounds a tad expensive, so I'm just wondering what kind of prices I could get from doing the build myself and where the cheapest place to buy components from is (I live in UK). Obviously this build includes that nice monitor, mouse and keyboard too (total of £155), but i'm not too fussed about those cos I can buy those separately.

Also on a side note, the SSD, are they worth the price? I mean i've heard loads of things about them, and obviously it improves startup and makes windows run faster or whatever, but you can get like... a 600gb 10k rpm hdd for £50 cheaper than a 160gb SSD. Obviously SSD's is a relatively new technology, but is the extra £50 and loss of 440gb space worth it? I was thinking I could just put a small (80gb) SSD in for the OS and whatnot and then a 750GB HDD (7,200rpm) for music, games, movies, etc. as this would be £6 cheaper.

Any help on this matter would be appreciated. Thanks

    Drop down to a 1.5gig 580, an i5 2500k, and get a 750/850W quality PSU(Seasonic, Silverstone, Antec, Corsair IMO)
Ditch the velo rapter, waste of money.
    Get a 60gig SATA 3 SSD for OS & a 1tb 7.2k drive for everything else.

That does sound quite expensive for those parts. Sounds like what I'd pay in dollars here in the US... so it should be significantly less for you. I'm not too familiar with retailers from the UK but try www.amazon.co.uk, I've heard they have decent prices on pc components.

Other than that everything looks good except personally I would advise against the closed loop coolers. There are better air coolers in that price range, such as the Noctua NH-D14. If you just wanna save some space go for it. I've had nothing but headaches with them though.

If you're going to be playing at 1080p, having the 3GB version of the 580 will only benefit you in like 2 games so far (that's not to say more aren't on their way though). If you have plans to do NVIDIA Surround keep it, otherwise I'd say ditch the 3GB and get the 1.5GB version. For the price of the 3GB version you'd probably be better going 6970 or 6950 CFX tbh.

As Noodles said you can drop the 2600k down to a 2500k if you just want to save some money. SSDs are really nice but they're kind of a niche product. Yeah it will improve start up times and load times of programs that are installed to it, but if you're not gonna be doing much other than like gaming or something I don't think you'll see a huge benefit. If you're constantly opening programs like Photoshop, Sony Vegas, etc then go for it because load times will be near instant.

They're all compatible. Maybe consider a 2 card setup as opposed to a 3gb 580 though.

Honestly, don't start off with a SLi or CFX setup, 1card>2card all the time.

I'd prefer 6970 or 6950 CFX over a 580 honestly. Much better price/performance. Yeah 1 card is preferable but if you're on a budget then its definitely worth it.

He's from the UK, and intel shits on AMD, so why recommend them?
He clearly has a nice budget so no point doing such a bad build. :S

Ugh, no AMD please. My dad bought an AMD laptop the other day and took it back the next day due to it being as slow as fuck. Anyway, start with one card, then get two. The more money you spend on the GPU(s) the better they will be.

AMD aren't slow by any means, they're fine processors whilst on a tight budget, but intel>AMD.

I'd much rather 1 card over 2 tbh, then in the future I can either add a second, or a whole new single GPU. Guess it might just be me. :p

Oh no, Nvidia SLI is awesome. I can't wait to run Crysis maxed out with it on the next few weeks. I know AMD is ok, but Intel's always better. I find Nvidia more reliable though.

Crossfire scales better then SLi, they're both fine GPU makers, I'll go with which ever single GPU gives me best price to performance.

Help with my new desktop build?

Well I haven't really a good a price 'budget' as such, I'd just like to be able to get something where I wouldn't have to upgrade it all the time and it could run most games on high/ultra settings atm. I'd say I have a budget of around £600 (preferred) up to £1000 for a top class computer where the difference is going to really visible. Still, i'm in rush if there's any new parts that are going to come out soon or something or prices lower.

6950 is the best of the 'enthusiast' GPUs in terms of price/performance. I'd much rather have 2x6950 than 1x580 because of eyefinity, more performance by a good margin, more vram (assuming the 1.5gb model) etc

Plus you can always trifire with another 6950/6970 or quadfire with a 6990.
