Black Ops and Portal 2 must run pretty bad on that laptop, unless you have your settings minimized. Try and find out your tempatures, an overheating PC is a unhappy PC. You might want to look into laptop cooling, maybe defrag your PC if it's running slow, update your graphics drivers. I'm not sure if your RAM is the problem, 4GB is more than enough. I think the GPU and possibly the CPU may be the problem, if overheating is causing the problem then you should get that sorted out, as it can slow down your PC performace and shorten the life of your hardware.

Actually it's running both Portal 2 and Black Ops fine. The only problem is it gets too hot (Normally I put some ice under it lol, but at least it works). I've already tried defragging my computer, but it might be that it's just too filled up. Out of that 500GB, I have have 50 left...

lol ice works. You should probably clear out all the junk on your laptop, you can't be using all the 450GB surely. Chances are it's probably all the system restore points your PC has made since you got it which can pretty much be safely deleted provided you keep one or two restore points just to be safe. You can use disk clean up to do so, or if you want a proper PC speeding up software I can recommend 'Advanced SystemCare' and 'Smart Defrag', these programs are specially optimized to speed up your PC. There is also a program called 'Game Booster' which temporarily shuts down unnecessary processes and makes the game you have running the #1 priority on your PC.

You could even consider a system format on which you wipe everything on your laptop and start over again, it's a bit extreme, but your laptop will be as fast as it was when you first got it if you do that.

Yeah, normally I just use CCleaner, I think it's called. I've considered a system format, but a) I'm just too lazy and b) last time I tried, it didn't work that well :/. A week later it was slow again. I guess it's just time for a new computer lol.

Possibly, Advanced SystemCare has been proven better than CCleaner, plus Smart Defrag has been reported worldwide the best free defragger/optimizer. You should try those out while you hunt for a new PC.

    specs are

    16gb RAM
    Intel i7 3.4 Ghz
    1.5TB HDD
    Windows 7 64
Nvidia Geforce (I don't remember the specific model)

Minecraft runs smooth but the problem is it just gets the error that says it's run out of memory I assumed I could solve this because I could just give it more memory and avoid the issue all together but doing that is more of a pain in the ass than it should be. How hard would it be for java to add an option that allows you to change how much memory it uses?

Wow ok, I doubt your PC is the problem, although it'd be great if you could get your exact GPU model.

I think I know what the problem is, your on Windows 7 64bit? A common problem to Minecraft Java crashing is the wrong Java version, as everyone gets the 32bit version no matter what version they have. Uninstall your current Java then download and install the one with the link given, then restart your PC and try Minecraft again. Same problem?

ok, most of the time memory isn't the problem it's just Minecraft doesn't really have any error messages yet. Anyway give that a try ASAP as I had the same problem as you and next thing you know it's fixed and hasn't crashed since.
