Allocating more memory to Minecraft?

I've been getting memory issues out the ass lately and I watched a video Here that was a tut on how to allocate more memory when I followed his exact steps it gave me this:

"'javaw' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program, or batch file."

Does anybody know how to fix this?

have you tried "javaw.exe" (without the quotes)? Javaw.exe is the processor for minecraft, so it should be working.

 

A simpler way to do it would be this..

Find the Java process in task manager:


Right click the process and and hover over "set priority":


Select "above normal" or "high" to increase your cpu usage on minecraft, you should get this window:


Just press yes it shouldn't effect your computer to much.

Note: Do not set to "realtime" because it can crash your computer.

 

Last time I tried to do that x339, my computer used ALL of it's energy (or whatever it's called) on minecraft; it crashed everything else, including skype, google chrome and even explorer.exe >__> Yes, even the tasklist froze, but atleast minecraft worked perfectly fine!

 

Yea if your not careful this can happen, I used to have to do this and I would close all other unnecessary processes to make sure it didn't take up to much cpu.

 

How come it's actually using that much memory? When I play MC it uses over 1 million K of my mem usage :/

Anyways my Java is already set to high because I run bots.

I just tried the javaw.exe thing and it didn't change anything :/

I believe it is because the game will try to generate and retain as many blocks as your computer will let it. That's why turning your distance seen down helps immensly. I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure that's what happens.

 

Out of interest, what are your PC specs?

 

Is there some way to limit this? Setting render distance to low obviously doesn't help, as I have it on "short", and yet it still takes around 1 million.

 

There should be a way to allocate a certain amount of memory for Java. Before people had a job allocating more memory, so I'm quite sure you can limit the amount of memory. You could always upgrade your RAM as well, it's quite cheap these days and you can easily get 8GB DDR3 for around £50 or $80.

 

Thats strange, but the only other options I can think of are adding more RAM or figuring out how to allocate a specific amount of CPU usage to Java.

 

I'm not really a computer freak, but I'm on a laptop, and I guess it's difficult changing the RAM. :/

 

Actually, changing the RAM is really easy to do on a laptop, unlike the processor and such. Do you know how much RAM you have at the moment?

Hmm, Minecraft ran fine for me when I had 4GB. Have you checked for other RAM intensive programs running?

 

Yes, and there honestly is none. Minecraft is running fine, but it's just really irritating, that I can't really do a lot of other stuff, while playing minecraft, as it takes all of the power >_>

 

ok, what are your laptop's specs? Let's see what's actually slowing it down as I doubt it's your RAM.

However, my computer is somewhat old and it can last longer than 5 minutes without charging. It also gets hot very easily and often, when I play games, that needs more memory, it just shutdown to prevent it getting to hot. It's especially when I play games like Portal 2 or Black Ops. Other than that, it's working fine.
