How do you protect yourself from Wifi Sniffers?

So, say I want to buy a rare, and I'm meeting someone at a wifi location. I read about these exploits all the time, where they can just see your password since the connection is not protected. Doesn't take much technological know-how which is the only concerning part.

So how do I protect my laptop/wifi from reading my passwords/anything else?
