    Deregulation

Is economic deregulation conducive to market vitality? Can the marketplace self-regulate without government involvement?

    Deregulation

Well without government involvement in the marketplace, we pretty much become socialists. Does socialism work, might be the question you are leaning towards.

    Deregulation

Socialism is when the means of production are owned by the state. The deregulation of the marketplace makes for a more laissez faire-esque system. To confuse the latter with the former is a bit troubling.

To answer the original question, a minimal amount of regulation is necessary to ensure a fair and healthy system: to prevent monopolies from engaging in anti-competitive behavior and the like. That being said, innovation can only happen in a more-or-less free market; deregrgulation can absolutely be beneficial to economic growth.
