    Fraternities & Sororities

    Should college/university students join a fraternity/sorority?

    Yes or No?
    Why?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fraternities_and_sororities

(If you're currently entering your first year of college/university, do you plan to join a fraternity/sorority?)

Note: You're allowed to agree with guys joining fraternities, and girls not joining a sorority... or the other way around.

no, they perpetuate the idea that money = higher status

even in university, where brains are supposed to be what get you by, rich parents pay for frats and sororities so that their kids can have a bubble sheltering them from eve having to grow up.

That's not true, as a first year college student I'm part of the TKE Fraternity ( Tau Kappa Epsilon ). There is no emphasis on money here, in fact we're just like all other college students. The biggest emphasis is on brotherhood, you watch out for your brother's and they watch out for you. Your response is about as ill mannered as I've read. The Job market for members of Fraternities and Sororities is a lot higher because of the connections they have with Alumni. Thank you for posting this retarded comment.

    I actually agree with Blazin.

But Lova makes some good points. Yes they're about brotherhood, but it's just another clique like everyone was in in highschool. The members look out only for each other and have a "holier-than-thou" opinion of themselves.

It's all about status. Having a group such as that helps them feed off each other's ego.

Well, they reduce grades, but sometimes a social life is more important than grades. I support Frats and Sorors.

Where I am at least, a lot of Frats are significantly cheaper than university housing.

I chose to live in a dorm out of personal preference, but I don't see anything inherently wrong with frats. There are some that aren't so great if your trying to actually finish college, but there are decent ones to.

Yes, if you're the type of person that I am when out with friends.
    For an eduction? Lolno.

It's sex, partying, fun, and an amazing time in college. I'm joining the military or I'd be fucking in on it in no time, without a doubt.
It's basically the next step for high school football-jock-douchebags.
Seems like an amazing time, but only if you're "one of the guys."
Not anyone can join though. So I suppose this opinion is personal and I'm incessantly rambling here...

    Fraternities & Sororities

Let me start off by saying I am in a Fraternity and it's the best decision I ever made. The benefits for being in one are endless. 85% of Fortune 500 executives, 63% of all President's cabinets since 1900, 43 of 50 nations largest corporation heads, 40 to 47 U.S. Supreme Court Justices, and 76% of all Congressmen and Senators were/are greek. Connections are endless and I have already obtained two summer internships because of the fraternity I am in. The bond between each other is amazing, and Fraternities make you a man by holding you to a higher expectation. On my campus we have 28 fraternities and 12 sororities. Greek G.P.A. average is higher than all campus undergraduate average.

Do it, you'll meet some amazing people, and have the time of your life.

This varies from school to school and fraternity to fraternity.

People have the view that greeks are all rich, but this is not the case. Not all parents pay for college. I speak from experience.

If you mean we carry ourselves with confidence, then yes, we do. I wouldn't call it a clique at all. I have many friends in other greek houses and outside the greek system.

I think you've been watching too much "typical douchebag fraternity" movies.

They do not reduce grades, in fact, at most schools the all greek G.P.A. average is higher than the total undergraduate G.P.A.

We have a great deal of social life, but learn to balance our time with grades.

You get the same education as anyone else attending the university. If you are talking about grades, then refer to my previous comment reply.

You sir, have also been watching too much "stereotypical frat guy" movies.

But thank you, it is an amazing time.

I just feel they focus too much on partying and having a good time.

I mean, not that I'm against it, but everyone I've ever met from a frat comes off as thinking they and their brothers are better than everyone else. It may not seem that way to the people involved in it, just like bitches don't know when they're being bitches, but to outsiders that is almost always how they come off.

Which is where the difference between Wet and Dry Fraternities come into play. Another great thing about many fraternities is they offer free tutoring. At ISU the Greek Cumulative GPA is higher then the GDi's. Yes there is more partying in the Greek Land, which is fun for some people, but all to often you see people coming from the dorm's trying to get into fraternities. You meet many people in Frats and Sororities and that can help you so much later in life. Connections are everything, GPA is almost nothing now.

I bet you could find tons of non greeks who drink as often or if not more often than us. As long as the person is making grades, the amount of partying is obsolete. There is nothing wrong with having a good time while having your shit together.

It may have been the occasion you have met them in. If it was at a party we usually are more cautious about outsiders because they are reckless and break things in our house because they don't have the respect for it like we do. If you've met them out class then it may appear that way, but not all are like that. Different houses have different people. I've met plenty of non-greeks who are huge assholes and don't know anything about what being greek is all about.

Your numbers are extremely overblown. Here are the more real statistics:

I agree, there is a definite relationship, probably caused by the alumni that you have access to.

As a freshman this year, I did not join a fraternity, but there are none on campus here. I don't think I would have either if it were an option though because I feel like:
    1. It may limit my circle of friends more than I'd like
    2. I will have an incredibly large network upon graduation based on my current connections and those that will come from the groups I am active in now
    3. Not really a reason, but my dad hates fraternities for some reason

Either George Washington University is wrong or Forbes is. But regardless if you can network by yourself that's great, just a fraternity helps you that much more. And about friend circles, it's up to personal preference. I have a large group outside of the Greek system but some choose to strictly stay to their house. All depends on the person.

    Fraternities & Sororities

Have you ever thought about how most people who aren't in fraternities treat fraternity guys? When I wear my greek letters on campus- I'm automatically stereotyped as a cocky, alcoholic, rich kid, who's a snob. You'd be surprised how ridiculous non-greek reactions are when I'm polite and humble.

Now as for all the frat guys you've met, think about where you've met them. If you've met them while in a group with their brothers- that's probably why you feel the way you do about them. Think of how it would be if you met this stranger who you know nothing about when you are with your best five friends. You probably don't care who this kid is, and want to get back to hanging out with your best friends. See what I'm getting at?

But I do know what you mean. I'm greek and I still think that even my own 'brothers' treat those who aren't in the fraternity differently. The thing is that once you join a fraternity you'll quickly find out that it can help you in literally every aspect of your life if you let it. Some guys rely too heavily on this and they soon start to think that everything outside of the fraternity doesn't matter anymore since the fraternity can help you in such a way. Thus, the douchbaggery.

I don't really know where I'm going with this, so I guess this is just some food for thought.

    - also, Honeo, I think your posts have been very insightful.

Frat boys, sorrority sisters cause all sorts of trouble
but hey, it's all precious memories, right? :/

I'd join one just for the memories, even if I knew that I would get into lots of trouble.

No more trouble than any non-greek member can and will cause. We're just always under a spotlight because of all the stereotypes.

    Honeo,

I am a brother of a fraternity also. It is difficult to describe to those outside of the system the value of what you gain by being inside. What fraternity did you pledge?

They do emphasize that money = power and that brotherhood is very important, but you become friends with many good people who will help you in life, so i think you should join :)
