First, look through the following list of private servers.

Most of the private servers in the top 10 list will have a torrent for the WoW client. If they don't, simply torrent (or download from the worldofwarcraft.com) the official WoW client.

Once you've chosen the private server you want to play on, you will have to download the patches for the client, according to the server you want to play on. Most of the servers are patched for Cataclysm (4.0.6-4.2) but you can play on past expansion servers too (these sites will generally have a guide for this).

Once patched, go to your WoW folder and navigate to /data/enUS and open the realmlist.wtf file in notepad. Edit the "set realmlist ...." text to the realm list stated on your choice of private server.

Note: Some private servers may require you to download a launcher. Simply follow their instructions.
