I believe it. If you search for anything, the top results are almost always related to google if there's something that even remotely compares to what you typed. They even come in above all the other pages that you were specifically looking for, no matter how accurate. Just a quick thought.

I don't really see this in my results. You got any example searches?

I should have said first page.
anyway, for starters any store, city, or address. I know google runs a map service, that's why.

calendar
wallet
book
music. (any song you type in come sup with youtube options. youtube is owned by google)
video
any product and you get google shopping
Google does math problems
Google tells time

just type some words in, most of those were ones I just randomly found.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that Google does such a wide variety of things that half the time they don't even direct you to another site because they can handle it themselves. Which is why people go to Google in the first place I suppose. But it keeps people on their sites looking at their ads which is in turn more profit for them and less for the other sites. If my opinion makes any sense..

OMG they are just like the US government. No surprise. I would like to see a more detailed list of these "cooked" results though.

Google news doesn't come up first for a search for "news," nor does Google books for "books," nor Picasa for "photos." If you don't like Google's search engine, you're completely free to use a competitor—and there are many out there—such as bing, ask, or yahoo.

If you find this interesting, read this too. It's all about a knowledgable person, pointing out all the problems with google's corporate methods and attitudes. I'd have to say, however much I love Google search and google+, this is a solid, truthful, and factual slap in the face.

Was actually in the process of writing almost exactly like. Good thing I looked up a post. If anyone's concerned that they're getting biased search results, don't use it. I don't get why that's difficult for people to understand.

They said that things like their map service are not actual results but rather information that is embedded into the search view as that is what people want. I tend to agree. If I type in an address, I don't want to get a website about it... I want a map. Google embedded their map service into the search engine to better serve people and that sucks for the little guys but is good for people in general.

Interesting, I honestly could care less if Google promotes their own products in THEIR search engine. As said above, if you don't like it, don't use it.

The problem is though, they control the flow of information and they could easily make it so that it would be near impossible to find other alternatives. They are obviously not doing this, so I don't really see a problem. If they wanted, they could outbid all of the people on the ads for free and display Google ads when you search for Bing, but they are obviously not doing that. >_>

Just a waste of Google's time. I'm confident they wouldn't do anything of the sorts.

Why not? It could make them butt loads more money.

It would completely ruin their reputation and most likely be their undoing.

But they could easily manipulate results in a way that made them more money without making it noticeable to the normal user so that they wouldn't lose any people. However, you are right that if it got out that they were being biased people would leave them as there would be a lack of trust so it might make sense financially to continue providing honest results.

Google isn't violating any laws and google is owned by them, companies use adwords to appear on top of the list when searched for terms related to that site/company, is google supposed to pay itself to make it legal for them to do it? Congress is out of term on this one and they should have better things to do.

We are talking about the main search. When you are paying for Adwords your advertisement appears over all the others and it is being blanked. Moreover, in that case none others are getting deleted and it does not affect the websites which are in the first places.

Google needs to make the search engine a little more fair, then everything would be good.

I don't see why google shouldn't be allowed to return whatever they feel like in their searches
