    Minecraft - Excessive CPU usage

I just started playing MineCraft, and I've noticed that the application uses a ridiculous amount of CPU usage. Also, it increases my CPU temperature by about 35 degrees Celsius. I don't believe the problem is my computer because everything else runs perfectly.

I'm using a MacBook Pro with 4 GB memory, an i5 2.3 ghz processor. What can I do to decrease the temperature/CPU usage?

Well temperature usage is surprising but the memory usage is because it is java based. What helps the most is going into options and changing to the lowest possible setting.

Make sure you turn off bobbing, smooth lighting, and other things like that. Otherwise there isn't much you can do about it.

    Google is everyone's best friend.

Here are a few things I'd recommend you browsing/reading:

The main suggestion, which I also personally use and suggest, would be to purchase a cooling pad if not already.

This in my opinion creates an extreme temperature difference.

However I am not a 'technological expert' when it comes to Mac's.

    Good luck anyway.

Settings I would recommend you use ->

    Graphics: Fast
    Smooth Lighting: Off
    3D Anaglyph: Off
    GUI Scale: Auto
    Brightness: Moody
    Render Distance: Tiny
Performance: n/a (haven't figured this one out yet)
    Bobbing: Off
    Advanced OpenGL: Off

Also, you should try allocating a little more RAM to Minecraft (max RAM you can allocate is 2GB or 2048 on that).

    http://www.buxville.net/showthread....t-Faster-Allocating-more-RAM-and-Java-6-(Mac)

There is one other thing I can suggest, which you can try (and I don't know how it will work).

    http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/249637-173-optifine-hd-g-fps-boost/

However, Minecraft is a very CPU-intensive program. I can tell you I'm running at a 50% load (running <10% normally) on a Quad Core @ 3.0gHz desktop w/ 16GB of RAM and Gfx cards that can blow away any game out there at the moment. Going on this, we can assume that a dual core @ 2.3gHz is going to be running between 80&100% CPU loads, which is why it's going to be hot no matter what you do.

Jeff suggested a cooling pad which will help to a certain extent: however, the rest of that (the links) seemed to be irrelevant information.

You can also try forcing the CPU to run at lower speeds (not sure how on a Mac) which will reduce heat, but is highly not recommended.

My final suggestion is to download the newest version of Java (7), if it's possible - I haven't seen a Mac version yet. http://jdk7.java.net/
This may help in CPU reduction (although I cannot guarantee it).

Edit: I found the Java 7 update instructions for Mac and they look rather daunting: http://wikis.sun.com/display/OpenJDK/Mac+OS+X+Port
There is another website which might assist in installation: http://java.dzone.com/articles/installing-java-7-mac-os-x
Read through and see if you can do this yourself. Good luck!

PS, This belongs in the "Technical Support" section, not the Minecraft. ;)

Yeah. For a game of this type it has a big ass CPU usage.

As said, high CPU is predictable. As for the heat, that's a problem with your computer. You should check to see if your CPU fan is working correctly, and look closely to see if any thermal paste is oozing out between the fan and processor chip...
