Why Did Myspace Fail While Facebook Didn't?

Myspace and Facebook were founded just one year apart from one another.
As we all know, Myspace was very popular, my Facebook exceeded it.

Once a mecca for people to socialize, Myspace is now more like New York in the movie I Am Legend.

    So why did this happen?

Because MySpace got stupid. Facebook kept it simple and sweet... and continues to do so. Not to mention the ridiculous adverts in MySpace.

ads in myspace are ridiculous? :/
last time I tried a facebook app, I was instantly bombarded by ads of other applications. Never used another app since then

what do you mean that myspace got stupid, and that facebook continues to keep it simple?

really just curious, this is the type of stuff that I'll be studying in university

Myspace landed up targeting a specific age group. They went for teens at the time, so they made customizable features and all these over-the-top things that really made it look immature.

Facebook however, keeps a neutral stand. Maintaining a product that is suitable for everyone.

However, I feel that once google+ starts rolling, facebook will also be flushed down the drain (fingers crossed:D)

I doubt google+ will do to facebook what facebook did to myspace. I do not know anyone irl who uses google+, no one I know has even heard of it. The only people who really know about it are people "from the internet". Plus nobody wants to just drop everything from facebook and start all over on google+

Why Did Myspace Fail While Facebook Didn't?

    Here's what happened.

Back in around '07 or '08, there were millions of users. Myspace was a force to be reckoned with. But right around the middle of '08, Myspace launched 2.0. It was optional for the original people, but for a lot of new users it was mandatory. This irritated people, because they didn't explain much about it.

This happened again in about '09-'10, where they upgraded to 3.0. It became much much slower, and there were lots of ads. I don't know if they kicked it into 4.0, but they were putting nails in the coffin. Myspace for me is now very slow running, hardly usable, there are too many features but none of them lead you anywhere useful.

Myspace has been killed. The problem is that Myspace tried to hard to turn into Facebook. When you have to start sampling from up-and-coming groups, you're saying "these guys are better and we need to change so that we can get cool like them".

Google+ will not take Facebook by storm. Although they have the same info-sharing policy, Google+ has been much more open, and if you use real info for your G+ you end up having your info logged.

I believe the downfall of MySpace was them trying too hard to copy Facebook. I for one very much enjoy the features that MySpace offered around the 2007-2009 era and would go back to it if I could. I personally find Facebook to be cumbersome and tacky in comparison to MySpace during its prime.

The majority of social websites are now in some way 'like facebook' Myspace however is a place for bands to promote themselves, and become big. Being 'liked' on Facebook isn't quite enough to promote a band properly, on Myspace they can upload their demo's, list their merch, + their gigs, ect ect. So that's what Myspace is used for now by the majority. Facebook is simple, and easy to get to grips with and provides a wide social network that appeals to all ages and isn't bias in any way, and is as stated before 'a place where people can whore attention' So this makes it very popular.

I feel your wrong, since you still need invites in order to even use Google+ there isn't really a way you can judge how it's going to affect facebook, once it's open to the public I'd like to assume people will start migrating.

Why Did Myspace Fail While Facebook Didn't?

Not to mention myspace was frowned upon by a lot of parents because of

    - lack of knowledge of the internet, social media, and things like that.
    - the lack of security compared to facebook
    - and the fact that there were a shit load of pedophiles who creeped on the teens who used myspace.

Zuckerberg sells out personal information to our governments? Not to mention the privacy aspects of facebook are minimal.

Not to say myspace was any different, but myspace was customizable. Something that facebook lacks. Most likely due to security exploits (?).

There are pedophiles on facebook too. Do you know how many fake facebooks there are? There are plenty. There are scene kids too. Loads of them.

Myspace was killed when the amount of features sky rocketed, the customizable shrunk, and the speed of the website slowed. They implemented changes without giving a beta (2.0 beta was the only beta).

Myspace was more of the forerunner of facebook that popularized the 'social networking movement'. It paved the way for the better designed Facebook.

I'm hoping that all social networks go down the drain eventually, they're all such a fucking waste of time no matter which one you use.

I see it as a way of linking with friends that doesn't involve harassing them with phone calls. Almost like sending them letters, except instantly.

I've heard a lot of the reason why people stopped using Myspace, was due to all the account hacking that was going on. Myspace was labeled insecure.

Meanwhile Facebook was starting to get big, and people decided to move on to that.
